As of version 9.4.39, new purchases will require the Pro license for scanning film. OCR file creation is also a Pro thing (not sure when that started, or if it was always that way). And version 9.4.43 requires a Pro license for Document Feeders. As far as I can tell an older license won't be affected, so please don't freak out over that.

You really should buy the pro license anyway for film scanning. The other versions lack a lot of features, and if you can afford a film scanner, you can afford Vuescan. Its only $80. I bought my Pro license 12 years ago, and it was about the same price back then. I've gotten way more than my money's worth.

I upgraded to Pro as soon as I realised both how good the software is, and that it is a small family run independent operation. Such companies, if they are to survive and continue providing us the products and services we want, need us to reward them with $$ for their innovation and hard work. If you have downloaded the free version and use it frequently, then I urge you to check out both the additional features in the pro version and the details about the firm, and seriously consider an upgrade.

Cheers,
Rob

One only needs to go through one upgrade of software or change of scanner with Silverfast to realise that Vuescan is virtually free (even Pro version).

Vuescan is far from perfect, but the price is the best thing about it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go pro by any means. I bought the pro version myself when I first bought it. But if you ever give the advice to try the software for film purposes and someone asks you what version they need, telling them the standard license will be counterproductive. They need the pro license for new purchases. It's just a heads up.
