Very unique design. Have never seen that recurve feature. It looks to take the horizontal spreading load of the arch into the foundation. Fancy !! I think that a shipbuilder had some input to this design 🙂

You remind me that there is a "bowstring" bridge design. I first thought this was a basic arch design, but I think as you ask, it is a bowstring type. If that is correct ???? the bowstring prevents the bow (arch) from spreading outward under load.
It is beautiful whatever design.

Hi Gene and Dave,
The bridge is in Hailey Idaho, it's called the "bow bridge", cost $720,000, funded by a single anonymous donor. It was a shock to me when I first saw it; fanciest footbridge I've ever seen anywhere. Before I saw the bridge I came across this:

No idea if the string serves a structural purpose.

It was completed in the fall of 2012.
"The bridge designer, Leslie Howa of Howadesign, said her inspiration for the design and Bow Bridge moniker came from her passion for archery and the Native American history of the Wood River Valley. On the east side of the Bow Bridge stands a 17-foot, steel arrow with three-foot fletches. Other embellishments include bronze bowstring loops; and steel leaves adorn the bridge, emulating the surrounding forest canopy."

Obviously it is the artist's right to name the bridge that she herself designed. But when you posted the first pictures of it here a few weeks ago, without its name, I immediately thought "Mastodon Bridge!" owing to its tusks. (Why not just "elephant," I don't know, but "mastodon" came into my mad mind.) It is beautiful, anyway. I'd be photographing the dickens out of it, as you're doing, if I lived somewhat nearby.

River Irwell.Once heavily polluted now very much cleaner. It forms a boundary no one can argue it divides the Cities, Salford Left bank Manchester right.
