Rather than start a new thread, I'm resurrecting a zombie one that never quite got any traction. Here's me and my son camping in Tahoe National Forest before heading out on a short backpacking trip. Any other RFF members that enjoy camping and backpacking? 😀

Wow, that must have been an incredible trip, Nick! Looks cold, and judging by the way the tent is guyed out, probably windy, too!

I've taken my son a few backpacking trips now, but this was the first backpacking trip with the whole family! We didn't go far, just a few miles, but the kids each carried their own little packs. 😀

Not so cold (relatively speaking, it was mostly above 0C), but yes, very very windy 🙂

It was an amazing trip, but very tough. Three weeks and ~500km solo, and I didn't see a soul for most of the middle bit.

This was from a few nights later. The world had become very monochrome...

A 500km solo trip?! 😱 Hats off to you, that sounds like a hard core adventure. Given the terrain and conditions, I'd say that's more "expedition" than "camping". Were there resupply points along the route?

Thanks, cjm! Our kids look about the same age (mine are 7 and 5), I'm sure they'll love backpacking. Too bad so many forest areas are on fire right now in California. We were supposed to camp near Big Sur a few weekends ago, but a wildfire closed down the campground.

p.s. Love this color photo you posted, we have the same kids' camping chair from REI. 😀

My kids are 7 and almost 4. So sad about the fires in CA and OR. The Dolan fire is burning really close to Limekiln Camprground near Big Sur, and possibly others.

We had reservations at Kirk Creek just down the road from Limekiln, and it was the Dolan Fire that closed the campground. 🙁 Meanwhile, the Forest Service has closed all the developed campgrounds in Tahoe National Forest where we were just a few weeks ago, due to extreme fire danger.

EDIT: I'm now reading that ALL eighteen National Forests in California are now temporarily closed. 😱😱😱 An excerpt from yesterday's press release:

VALLEJO, Calif., September 9, 2020—Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of an additional ten National Forests, meaning all eighteen National Forests in California are now closed. The closure of the additional ten forests will be effective at 5:00 pm today. These additional forests include the Eldorado National Forest, Klamath National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Mendocino National Forest, Modoc National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Plumas National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. This decision will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change.
