W/NW - Camping

I started out with a sleeping bag and a stinky canvas tarp, wound up with this. Yeah, it's not camping it's RVing. We're too damn old to sleep on the ground. View attachment 4823537

Yep, we started out back packing and tent camping, then a folding tent trailer, then a 25 ft travel trailer and finally a 34 ft fifth wheel trailer. Unfortunately, arthritis and a severe back problem put an end to all that. Now we look for pet friendly hotels, etc., or we just stay home. So it goes, to quote Vonnegut.

My sister graduated from exploring on a sailing boat with her husband and two children to a Benz Sprinter bus and is still doing that many moons later. They spend most of their time in Scandinavia where there is 'the right to roam': you can park and stay anywhere as long as you clean up after yourself.

I’ve spent a lot of time hiking in the Nordic countries and the ‘right to roam’ is amazing.

I have th e same problems and find the RV thing easier than a motel stay. Our rig has auto level, electric slides so setup is painless. Packing gear in and out of the motel room and sleeping on a bed of unknown comfort puts me off. I'm rather stubborn and will RV travel until I'm simply not able to. Plus there are few motels convenient to where we like to go.

As a kid, many, many moons ago, I remember a group of American campers stopping over in my town. I forget the name of the things...silver aluminum elongated cigars is the best I can describe their caravans. It was as if they came from a different planet.

Airstreams? That’s at least the classic example of the style I can think of.

My brother in law, for a while, did brisk business refurbing classic airstream trailers with all sorts of amenities. He built one for Matthew McConaughey at some point in the 2010s. It was strange to see his metal working details appear in photo shoots and media pieces.

They’re really versatile little trailers, and with a bit of skill even the old ones can be very comfortable.

My good friend & musical guitar picking buddy Ward Chandler, runs a few FB & Instagram pages. Airstream Hunter.... started out as a lifestyle for him & now it's his main business.

Well, over the years I've backpack camped, tent camped, camped with a folding trailer, a standard pull-behind trailer and a fifth-wheel trailer. I've even slept in my car. But that is a new one for me.
