W/NW: Half Frame Photos

This thread is making me re-think my previous dim view of half frame as a useful format. I'm very impressed with the technical quality of many of these shots; perhaps my limited experience with poor quality cameras was the exception rather than the rule.
Of course, these days, when I shoot half frame, it means 645 instead of 6x9. 😉 But my reasons are still the same as those of 35mm shooters: weight, bulk, economy.

The sharp rise in the price of color films had me thinking about switching to digital for color work. Acquiring a nicely functional Olympus Pen-FT got me back to shooting half-frame. Getting fifty shots from a 24-frame roll gives me a cost of about ten cents per shot. I already knew that from shooting my Mercury II, but the little slr gives me a lot more flexibility with an assortment of really excellent lenses. I've also found that there is no reason to avoid 400-speed films with half-frame, and I actually prefer them now in both b&w and color.

I'm finding myself carrying the Pentax 17 absolutely everywhere. I can shoot 72 to 76 shots per a 36 exp roll, and I always preferred vertical/portrait orientation forever so half frame format really works for me. Zone focusing, dial based modes including flash control, centered viewfinder, and very light weight of Pentax 17 makes it super easy to carry and just snap around. Lens is sharp and triplet lens design gets me the pop I like. This camera turned out to be the best purchase I made this year at least.
