I have always been fascinated by history and have read numerous books while growing up. Sadly, I don't get much time these days to indulge in my favorite pastime activity.
I have visited several historical places in India before I moved to the US. Centuries old palaces, castles, gardens, statues etc. gave me a sense of calm despite the tumultuous events attached with them. I believe history is the greatest teacher of all and makes you humble and grounded.
Recently, I visited Gettysburg and it's battleground. I have read about the American Civil War and know the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg. It was a nice fall day with very few tourists. I spent quite some time there learning, and wondering. I cannot describe in words how I felt there, I think it is best experienced in silence, to pay respect to the many thousands who perished there.
I looked but didn't find a similar thread, I think it is appropriate to start one where we can appreciate the times which made us what we are today. Anything of historical can be posted - place, event, structure etc. Please write a line or 2 about your photo so we can all learn.
This is the main battleground from the Union Army's point of view. The 90 degree angle where the 2 rock walls meet is called the "The Bloody Angle", site where one of the most fiercest battles took place on July 3, 1863.
This is the famous Pennsylvania State Capitol located in downtown Harrisburg.

Addy, it's famous because of it's artwork - paintings, sculptures, murals, stained glass windows. I have visited many government buildings in the US, this one definitely stands out, it's beautiful.

The Brick Church on Well's Hill, now known as Old Blandford Church of Bristol Parish, is located in Petersburg, Virginia adjacent to Blandford Cemetery. It was erected in 1735 and is the home of the Confederate Veterans Memorial and contains 15 stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
On June 9, 1866, the first Decoration Day service was conducted by the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg. This event became the inspiration for the national observance of Memorial Day.

This is the Taj Mahal, built in the 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the world and you will find much better photographs (compared with mine) on the web.

The venerable Tax and Trade Center, one of Saigon's landmarks dates back to 1880. During the French colonial period it was known as the
"Grands Magazins Charner", an upscale department store selling imported luxury goods from mainly France and the UK to the colonial upper
crust. It was overhauled in 2002, but the original staircase was left intact. Not so long ago, I read that the building will soon be demolished to
make way for a planned subway station.
