I've shot 1/2 sec handheld at 75mm and it came out sharp, but just once. I guess we get lucky sometimes.

pretty much what you guessed first. tripod. long exposure. didn't use the door. just walked (carefully, so as not to knock it down -- I'm a klutz) past the tripod. there's a bit of ghost image on the chest of drawers that I suspect was our cat deciding, as cats do, to not cooperate with my plan.
i'm curious as to how the color version of this photo would look like. i have a feeling it would be even more quirky and interesting.
