It's been almost 3 years since my dad died. He was proud of his service in the Pacific theater, but like most, he didn't talk about it much. He sometimes lamented, in a lighthearted way, that his medals and service ribbons had been lost by my elder brothers, long before I was born. Acted like he really didn't care too much. And probably didn't at the time.
In 2002, I decided to replace those lost awards. I knew my old man wouldn't be here forever (he was 84 then), and I wanted him to have them before he was gone.
One day at lunch, I casually asked him what medals and ribbons he received during the war, and he gave me one of those "oh I don't remember, son" answers. But the next week he offhandedly gave me a piece of paper that had listed on it every single medal and service ribbon that he had had when he was discharged in December, 1945.
The Army/Navy store had the shirt, and the unit patches. I knew them from his wartime photos. The extraordinary resource that is Ebay allowed me to acquire the actual medals and ribbons I needed.
On July 4, 2002, he was surprised with the request to don this khaki wartime shirt, and stand to be decorated with his missing medals and ribbons. My mother told me later that he cried like a baby that night. He wouldn't tell her the reason. If it was for pride of service, or memories of those, his buddies, that fell, I'm sure it was the latter. I knew my Dad very well.
That shirt, replete with his awards, stood next to the floral arrangements at his funeral 10 months later.
Sorry to be so maudlin, but I'm damned proud of my old man.

And George, here's to your Dad, I hoist one in his honor!

Not a RF camera but with my Hasselblad.

My dad died when I was 12. I'm using his cameras now.

I don't know who took this photo (it's from before he met my mom), when, or with what. I thought it was from my Rolleiflex, because I think he was using it around this time but the weird swirly bokeh makes me wonder. Also, my Rollei is from 1966 so there's a limited time range during which it could have taken this picture, which the actual picture may fall outside of. Wish he was still around so I could ask him.

The first time I saw this photo I was a little kid and thought to myself, "You mean Dad used to be cool?!?" I knew nothing.

My Father 'officially' hated having his picture taken. This is from 1972. Leica IIIf, Nikkor 50/2, Tri-X @ 1200, Edwal FG-7

My dad died many years ago. I like to recall him as I pictured him through the viewfinder of my new (to me) Leica IIIa while he was checking out my brand new 1952 Plymouth convertible. This was scanned from a print because I do not have a film scanner.

I have almost no photos of my Dad which I like. He's one of those people who is always blinking or grimacing at the moment the shutter is pressed. Perhaps he has a decisive moment sensor :D

Anyway, this time he was unaware he was being photographed, and looking downwards, so I couldn't catch his eyes at half mast...

My dad

My dad

Lost him almost not 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, there were magicians at work in the OR and wizards in the IC. So, he's still with us.

_My dad in hospital_

My father in 2000. Shot with either the VHR or the Wisner on Tmax 100.

(He seemed to derive some joy in watching me fumble with the lights... )

I took this picture during 1962 with a folding Wirgin 6x9 cm and two 150W Photoflood lamps.
My dad is easy to recognize among the ladies, and was aged 42 at that time.
To his right is my mother, and my sister just in front of them. The nurses were his assistants at the Hospital at the very beginning of his duties. Mom was helping him taking care of the paperwork.
I really feel proud of both, and miss´em since they´re gone.
