Canon USM lenses emit an ultrasound signal at 30kHz when they focus. USM = Ultra Sonic Motor.
I figured this out as my neighbor's dog went nuts whenever I tried to take a picture of him.
It might also explain why the lions carried around the Canon cameras with such enthusiasm.
We do not hear it, but the canines and the felines do.
