W/NW: Portraits with shallow DOF

Interesting OOF areas in the background Pherdinland i'm assuming this is the the original sonnar not the latest Zeiss 50/1.5 offering?
I'm looking for a 50mm or 40mm fast lens (1.4/1.5) for a project back in the UK - this thread has been a very useful one but it has fueled GAS again......

I like the tonality of your colour work Rich is this shot from the same series that you posted on DA when i thought the shot was of Melanie?

Simon, yes its from the same day - taking photos of a former co-worker.
I got a bunch more from that day but I must admit I wasn't very happy with any of them.

Another one from that day, Hasselblad:

I hate to say it but this was shot on a DSLR. I've been experimenting with shallow DOF portraits and it's much easier and cheaper to experiment with digital but I shall apply this knowlege to RF in due course. This is a canon EF 50/1.4 mounted on an Eos 20d @ F2

interesting

interesting

I'm also on a quest for shallow DOF and experimenting with a DSLR. I have to pretty much keep at 1.9 or one stop down, even going to extreme (1/4000) shutter speeds for shallow DOF. Of course, it matters on distance from subject, and also background distances. Main "prime" lens I'm now using is a 35mm 1.9 Vivitar.

Nice shot Abbazz i used to have this lens - it's one serious piece of glass especially if you have a lens hood attached! Beautiful portrait lens.

Thanks Simon. The lens is quite heavy indeed but looking at the huge glass element closest to the film plane, you can understand why.

Did you part with this lens because of the weight?

Cheers,

Abbazz

Unfortunately i had to purge some kit to make travelling lighter and more practical; what went was the BLG690 + 100 and 180 lenses and i decided to keep the later version GW690iii.

Simon: Indeed,it's the old Sonnar, although coated postwar but the old design.
I guess the new one is somewhat different.
The OOF has become like that mainly due to the strong contrast between the black branches and the bright sky beyond. ANd the extreme perspective (focused to close, bnackground very far).
Here's an even more extreme version, same parameters.

Two more pictures that I just uploaded to my gallery. They were taken with my faithful Fujica G690 with standard 100mm lens, wide open, with the "auto-up" close-up attachment. Film is Fuji Pro 800z converted to BW in Photoshop.

Pherdinand i like the latter one even better!

Abbazz you really get something quite extraordinary with that 100 lens with the close focus feature - i always liked what it could do at 1m but seeing your shots with a closer focussing distance and the enhanced contrast really makes for powerful abstract portraits.

Do you know if this is useable on a Fuji GW690III? How much would this cost?

Thanks,
Nick

Red scale Elmar 50/3.5 wide open:

p.s. You guys shooting with the Summicron 50 DR are going to put a serious dent in my wallet!
