But I don’t understand where basic fact checking has gone in modern journalism - if he was born in 1943 the oldest he can be is 78, not 79 as stated in the article.

Not a fact checking as much as a translation error. In China, people are born aged one.
I don't think I've seen his photos, will look now.

I have heard from a friend that when a child is born, they start with age=1.
