I put the topic here instead of in the Accessory category because I want to warn more digital M user to avoid this terrible product.

To be able to use my Elmar 50mm LTM on my M9 and not leave the mount detection sensor uncovered as with original Leica adapter, I am looking for something like "For lenses like the original Elmar 5cm, there are a few specially cut out adapters on the bay that has the sensor portion covered (and milled for coding at the back), and the right side cut out to allow the low profile infinity stopper to clear the adapter and move towards 1m. " (suggest by Bennyng, and original discussion in htt://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143696)

There are only two brand of this kind of adapter available in market, the Kipon and Metabones. I read some good review on Metabones about there M->M43 adapter before and had an impression that they have a very high standard of quality. So I order one from adorama, and it's exactly the one list this

The Adapter arrived last evening. It came with a good factory box, looks good. But when I took the adapter out, I can feel immediately that it's a cheap made products. I put it on my M9 with a lens and it's strange to feel some fraction between the camera mount and the back surface of the adapter. At first I thought it's too tight, so I un-mount and re-mount for several times and even try it on another M body ----what a terrible mistake I made coz my blindly trust on Metebones. The metal edge of the cut out area brass scrubbed the M9 and my film M's mount and made a clear scratch on it. My heart was bleeding!:bang::bang::bang:

after I checked the adapter more carefully, I found the following major problems.
1) all the metal edges are not refined. they are sharp enough to cut your finger or something. Most seriously, the edge of the cut out area will scrub your camera mount.

2) the lens lock and release mechanism can't lock the adapter. Same root cause of the poor building quality in problem 1.

3) when I install in on my LTM lens, I can feel some unsmooth rotation between the adapter and the lens thread. Guess the same root cause of the problem 1 and 2.

Maybe it's a good design from Metabones, but the poor building quality and control ruin everything. I would like to warn all RFF members to stay away from this terrible product until they make something to correct the problem.

I will return the item to adorama. I have no complain to them

BTW, I found some similar review on adorama's website. Seems that I am not the only one been bite.

Some following up
1. I returned the item to Adorama. Their service is very good.
2. I also emailed to Metabones to report the problem I encountered. They replied me after 1 day and offered a change of item. Anyway the quick response and right attitude is a nice thing. Hope they can locate and fix the quality deviation in the production.

I found a similar problem in a generic LTM adaptor I bought a few months ago. I don't think it scratched the camera mount any, but all the edges were very sharp, and it had a very rough feeling in mounting both on the camera mount and the lens threads.

I solved the problem by working it over with some 1000 grit sand paper then 0000 Scotchbright.
One of these days I'll buy a genuine Leica adaptor and ditch the generic one.

If it was a cheap generic one, I would have done the same DIY fix. But it's a branded item and 3 times as expensive as a generic one.

Ironically, I used to have several generic adapters. While material is just so so, the building is better than this Metabones one.

Metabones LTM to M adapter

Metabones LTM to M adapter

I have used the Kipon LTM to M adapter on my M8 w/o any of these problems. The build quality is just fine. I don't know any dealers who supply this adapter though, I purchased mine @ Photo Plus Expo a couple of years back. I six bit coded mine and it works fine. ( I mounted a Canon 50/1.8 LTM lens and coded it as a 50/2 Summicron lens). I would like to find a dealer who suppies these Kipon adapters.

I had problems with several Metabones mount adapters, tried exchanges, etc, and returned all of them. I stay away from the brand now.

I've used Voigtländer, Kipon, and Rayqual adapters very successfully. I adapt the Color-Skopar 28/3.5 and 50/2.5 lenses to M-bayonet with Voigtländer adapters and they work perfectly.

I use Novoflex adapters for Leica R, Leica M and Nikon F lenses, adapting to Sony E-mount. They work very well.

FUUUUUCK.... This just happened to me :( Wish I had seen this thread earlier.

I had the same impression of Metabones. I preferenced them over the Kipon when looking for a 6 bit adapter. I was impressed with their quick shipping, but now have the same deep scratch on both my M9 AND M6 :( I only put it on my M6 to test it, as it wasn't locking in to my M9. The adapter wasn't cheap, on top of being useless to me as it doesn't lock into place, it has now damaged BOTH my Ms :( :( :(

I've already written to them asking what's next, but those scratches on the lens mounts are forever :( Heartbroken :(

I had to return a Metabones Leica M to Fuji adapter because it was way too tight on the lens. So tight in fact that when I did get it on it distorted the mount. There seems to be serious problems with their machining and tolerances. The Novoflex adapter I replaced it with was more expensive but fits beautifully and infinity focus is spot on.

I know these adapters aren't six-bit coded, but I look for them and prefer them to any other generic out in the market: Fotodiox.

They're available for sale in Amazon.com. I got my first off the auction site, but my second (which I use with my Canon 35mm on my M4), was purchased from Amazon. NO problem whatsoever, the adapter comes in a very nice box, and carefully packaged. Granted, you will have to do the coding yourself, but the adapter won't hurt the lens mount.

I don't know why Voigtlander stopped making these in the first place. My Voigtlander adapter is perfect! But I was worried about the possibility of metal filings ending up inside my cameras if I kept unscrewing and screwing lenses into adapters, and the 6 bit coding would be great for my M9, so after failing to find a Voigtlander one online anywhere settled for the metabones one, and have probably ended up with metal filings inside my cameras anyway :( I'm fscking fuming right now :(
