My M7 is second hand. The original owner had a passport warranty and an extended warranty, too. Everyone at Leica USA who could answer my question seems to be on vacation,

Question: Are the warranties transferrable?

You really have to talk to Leica USA. They are the only ones who can tell you for sure.

I have heard that the warranty belongs to the original owner. Period. I have also heard of original owners submitting the equipment for warranty repair for the secondary owner.

You didn't hear that from me. I was never here! 😱 😀

When you submit warranty papers to Leica in the United States the seller must be an authorized US Leica dealer or else they will not honor the warranty. I read somewhere (maybe in my own M7 warranty papers) that the US Passport warranty is not transferable, but I also read on this forum just a few days ago that Leica in the UK extended the UK Passport warranty to a second owner with no problems. These policies seem to be local.

I also have a gray market M7 from Australia and the warranty for that is valid. If it is ever necessary I can send the camera to Solms for repair and they will honor the warranty.

As Wayne states above, many sellers will offer to submit a warranty repair for you. Of course you have to pay the extra shipping but its almost certainly worth it.

Just an update:

The guy who is replacing the guy who is on vacation at Leica USA reponded very quickly to my inquiry about transferring warranties. No, he said, neither warranty is transferrable.

Oh well. I'm still indebted to the doctor who originally purchased the M7, didn't use it, preserved it perfectly and then sold it for a fraction of its original cost. Where would we be without such humanitarians?
