Chess on the cold streets of Portland.

passive moment?

On another note, I thought of starting a "Derisive moment" thread for a change... Might be a funn idea.

Back to your pic: What's the special moment and have you cought it?

not a one, nothing special at all. Just some guys playing chess and one watching from the outside. Sort of a slice of life. I mean if I was the kind of person who over analyzed everything I could see young and old, I could see street guy with the cleanest white shoes I've ever seen.

Naww, none of that, just a couple of guys playing chess while a guy looks on.

NB23: If you start that thread, I'm in. I think a discussion of how each of us defines "the decisive moment" (assuming we care at all) would be thought-provoking at the very least.

Michael: FWIW, I find your "moment" interesting.

thanks Barret, I really think of photos as just moments. All the other words are just icing. We can walk around for a lifetime and never see a "decisive" moment, we can travel the earth looking for the "passive" moment but you know what happens when we do that?

We miss all the "other" moments. I'm not HCB, or Evans and I'll never be. I'm just me.

NB23: Beautiful. The first one is almost surreal somehow. I think we're going to see more than a few interesting "moments' in this thread.

Not sure how these qualify to a "decisive moment cathegory, but yet...

Thanks NB, I never saw that option before. alex those are great, I really like the last one. The woman seems to go into a defensive posture as the man walks by.

ywenz, great shots, I love Chicago. I have a shot I took at the water fountain thing, I'll dig it out. Chicago sure has a lot more photo Ops that Pullman, Wa.

Thanks Mike.
I also prefer dynamic images - they just convey the street feeling for me. At that one you mentioned the women indeed may seem to enter defensive position kinda pulling out her pepper gas can....:D....
In fact, I was just crossing the street to teh other side stepping onto the road when glanced back, noticed the situation just behind on the walkside and snapped the image in the split of second. AFAIK, I even hadn't time for proper focusing but relied on scale focusing (luckily having my 35mm 'Cron per-focused and set for large DOF as I often do with 35mm lens).

The tones/gradations look sooo smooth. Really beautiful. Something about it grabs my attention immediately (besides the obvious content). Great shot. Realy love it. :)

Sorry to bother but what lens and fstop was this shot at?
