Weegee The Famous

Weegee was the best american photographer, but due to his humble origins and his aesthetics he never got the recognition he deserved... While others who were actually imitating Eurpean photographers got all the credit -- Walker Evans for example who blatantly imitated Atget.

It was a cold, wet night. The hard streetlights bounced up off the sidewalk through the window. It was the kinda night when a feller's thoughts turn to cliché.

I turned on my computer and began to type...

The sun rose over the vineyards this morning. I had a cup of java and one of those French rolls they call croissants. The blond at the bakery looked like Bardot and as the morning heat rose I imagined her slipping out of dress and into the Med. It was one of those French days and I logged onto Rangefinderforum to see what the latest gab was on my blurb about Weegee.

Yeah, it was a day like that. Purple with prose and grape vines.

Glad you didn't take the writing too seriously but got it that Weegee was a great but mostly unrecognized American photographer.

I can't share in the opinion that Weegee was the "best" American photographer - I would rank many other Americans in front of him. WeeGee was the right guy for his place in time - but he captured a very narrow perspective of American life that lacks the diversity and flavor of a more travelled journalist. There are many, many other US photographers/photojournalists like Gene Smith, Mark, Capa, or Nachteway (to name a few) that exceeded Weegee's limited scope, abilty and sensitivity when one considers their complete portfolio of work produced throughout their careers.

Interesting comment about Walker Evans. He didn't imitate anyone, and was one of the best photographers that ever lived. Only Dorothea Lange was in the same league concerning documentary work, but Evans photographs have a magic that few photographers ever realize. Great, great stuff.

Weegee was the King of Flash, and certainly an original.

Evans' and Lange's colleagues were just as good if not better... They're just "lesser known" And between Evans and Lange, I'll take Lange for her humanity. Evans' people pics are a little icy. Weegee, well, he's Weegee.

If you could resurrect a famous photographer for just one night, who would it be? My choice would be Weegee. I would take him to my favorite dive bars, introduce him to my friends, and by him Pabst longnecks all night long.

However, getting the shot was only half the game. The papers needed prints and needed them in time to get the shots into their morning editions. Weegee built a darkroom in the trunk of his car so that after getting the shot he could process the film and make a print, on the spot. Then he’d drive off at breakneck speed to the offices of the News or the Mirror or the Trib and make the sale. (see Gallery)

Hard core! 😱

Interesting read, thanks for the link. 🙂
