You might tape or sew them in lightly to start, to feel the balance, and then sew them firmly in the right place once you've got the proper balance.

I used a Lowepro Slingshot 200 on a bike trip and it worked very well, but I was only carrying a single DSLR , 2 lenses, flash and accessories.
