I sold my M8 some 3 months ago now and have to confess that every day since, was like a living hell.

Never mind being trapped in a mine for 2 months, each day brought a peculiar mixture of emotions. From the simple, repetitive question "why", to a self-depricating disbelief that "I could be so stupid". I kid you not.

The Canon G7 was a meer pinhole camera in comparison. Who was I trying to kid that it would do the same job? Or have that same feel.

So the solution was simple. Dismantle and sell one of the motorbikes in the collection. Sell the parts on Fleebay and buy another.

She arrived today. Oh baby. Upon opening the box, I knew how those miners must have felt.

So my message is simple boys & girls. Don't sell your M8, no matter whether you use her all the time or not. YOU WILL REGRET IT.

P.S.

Have noticed the Framelines and the LED's have a pronounced downhill slope to one side. Anyone have any ideas what has happened. The camera has the appearence of one fresh from the factory, though it isn't. It's got 10,000 frames under it's belt, yet it's immaculate.

I can only assume it's had a knock on the left top corner at some point and shifted an assembly.

Is this something relatively easy to sort (I'm technically minded), or not.

Well, I sold my M8 a couple of months ago and have had no real regrets so far ... which isn't to say I don't miss it in some ways though.

I miss it's size and miss the rangefinder form for my digital photography ... but I don't miss it's crappy high ISO performance and the staple gun shutter!

Yeah. I guess cause the story is new. I fell from a bridge in Feb 09, 30+ft, I laid in a coma, drug induced and on a vent for eight weeks. I almost died a couple of times. I had to learn to walk, swallow and a couple of other things. I am still only about 75% of what I was. I can laugh and joke about it now but at the time I couldn't.

You equate being without your M8, that you willingly sold, to being trapped 1/2 mile underground, away from everyone you love, not knowing if you will live or die! And you also equate getting a new M8 with being rescued from a would-be tomb and being reunited with your family.

I'm glad someone can see the funny side there.

As a keen writer, I was merely using `poetic license` and allowing my imagination to run riot a little (a great feeling). Comedians make ridiculous comparisons all the time, though I apologise if I caused any offence.

However, as someone who has had no contact, knowledge, photo's or any idea of the current lives of their Mother, Father or Sister (their choice) since 2000, there is more than a grain of truth to the story.

Rather like Tom Hanks and `Wilson` the Basket Ball, people in solitary situations regularly form bonds with objects that to `normal` people, seem ridiculous.

I may have exagerated the significance of the M8 a tadd but I did feel truly lost without it.

The miners are fine. Why can't he joke? People in wars, who have legs blown off, make jokes. It's a proven human strategy for helping in dark situations.

Sorry. IF they're in the UK you should be able to find them. Start with 192.com - they can trace anyone on the electoral register. Anyway, not my business.

I like the photography on your website. A good variety, but a distinct style, too. Humour is a good way of dealing with this world.

I sold my M8, bought a D700, regretted that and sold it, and bought a M8.2. Sure, the high ISO and generally IQ of the D700 is more modern, but the feel and use of the M8.2 is where I feel at home. I just can't get into SLRs.

It's a funny coincidence, because there is Keith in another thread talking about how satisfied he is with the switch, whereas he we have another experience altogether!

I consistently encounter a block in my RF photography where I need something that allows better high ISO and/or has fast AF. The D700 is very tempting, but I can never get myself to go through with giving up all the RF equipment I'd need to sell (at a loss?). Plus, everytime I've tried a friend's DSLR, I keep thinking, there's no way I'm really gonna want to lug that thing around with me?!

Everyone has their own path. But darn, does it have to be this expensive and difficult?

I'd only ever part with my M8 if 1) I were to get an M9 (or any other future digital rangefinder) or 2) I would desperately need the money. Or if it stopped working of course - but heaven forbid this ever happens! 🙂
