What’s your favorite DSLR (Gen 1 - 12mp or less)

My first one was a D100 I eventually converted to IR, then a D200 - also converted to IR, and which I still use. I also continue use a D300 some, but I foolishly sold my D700 when I got the D800. The D300 is still a great workhorse when called upon.
 
1+ for the Fujifilm S5.
That sensor, though a mere 6MP, had a rendering all its own. Skin tones, vivd colors. I do regret selling it.
 
After starting with the APS-C 10MP Nikon D200 and 12MP D2, the 12 MP Nikon D3 is the camera I miss. Mainly because of the body---solid mechanically AND optically(viewfinder). Been going through old 12MP files from the D3 lately. they're pretty good.
 
My first personal DSLR was a Nikon D100 which was ok but once I got my hands on a D2Hs, I knew that was the pro tool I wanted. I've owned two of them. The D2X is good too but that D2Hs is still killer. I wish I could find one with a nice low shutter count.

I had always been a film user but my spouse was getting ready to list a bunch of small items for online sale. I had a 55 Micro-Nikkor but needed a digital body. Ended up with a D2x, it was a beast and had a shutter rated for about a billion actuations. It did the job I needed for and was traded in on a Df but for the short time I owned it, I could see it was built to Nikons highest standards for a pro camera. Originally about five grand, now you can get them for a couple hundred bucks. Plus, if I recall, it has the flip up lever so you can use non-Ai lenses.
 
Well I still use D3s's for low light work and with my 200-500 Nikkor. To me they are a bargain. If all my gear was stolen I'd buy two of them.
I also recently bought a D2x which thom hogan reckons is better at base iso than the D3's. I use it with a 20mm f2.8 Ai. The trick is to put a DK17M viewfinder magnifier on the D2x, in fact I put these on all my pro Nikons ie D810, Df, D3s, D2x. Makes manual focussing so much easier.
Had two S5Pro's myself but these days their need for a fuji battery rather than the standard Nikon en-el15 must be a pain. If Fujifilm had developed that sensor further I would have stuck with them. I am often tempted by a D2h but worry about a mere 4Mp. Just not sure how big I could print from that.
I borrowed a D200 but the viewfinder was just too much tunnel-like for me.
D2x is the bargain for me, battery lasts forever too. I also don't think it's as bad at high iso as the web likes to make out.

Bought the D70s new when it came out, great camera but after my brother borrowed it it magically disappeared... Bought a D700 a week ago and it has really impressed me so far.
 
I've owned the following DSLRs in the up to 12MP category and several copies of most of them.

Olympus E1
Olympus E3
Olympus E5
Olympus E400
Canon 5D
Nikon D70
Nikon D300

Still have an E1 and E400 and both are used.

It's difficult to pick a favourite but if I could only have one it would be the Canon 5D. However, I'd happily use any of them if they were all that were available.
 
My only and 1st DSLR was bought a few months ago,
The Nikon D50, with CCD for lens and body, charger, Canadian $60.
The sensor was what i wanted, it's specifications similar to M8 (Kodak).
I've used friends and agencies cameras but truthfully prefer small point and shoots!

When I left my staff job I used a 1d and a d60 most money I've ever made from photography with these two bodies. Since then I've had all the 1d bodies hasn't made me any better a photographer. I think if you want to go really old school you need a Nikon d1 I've still got a couple of them good fun every now and again. Had a d200 as a holiday camera really liked that with a 24mm 2.8 and a 85mm 1.8 have thought about buying one of them again also.

Even a few very recently.
I cannot stand the slow write speed.

Sure it felt faster back then... spoiled I guess!
 
There is no digital section for SLRs - UnRF.

Maybe General Discussion? But again.

This is the appropriate sub in my opinion/experience.

It’s not actually a serious post - so it’s neither here nor there.

There's lots of DSLR threads in this section, and in the "let's see pics of your SLR" thread. I can't think of a better place for them.


On the other hand.... There are eleven different Leica forums, assuming I counted correctly; if bandwidth becomes an issue maybe one or more could be consolidated to make a DSLR forum.
