What a joke !

Anybody dumb enough to bid without getting more details from the seller has no excuse when he/she gets ripped off..

When I see an auction with no details I email the seller for information. No response.....no bid from me..

No sales feedback, buyer feedback has no photo-related items, two cameras, two lenses, listed as NEW. Obvious hacked account, but there is a reason why there continue to be hacked accounts: there are lots of people who are oblivious.

Is my overtaxed brain out of whack or is it pretty dumb to buy anything worth more than, say, $100 over the Internet?

I don't know where you're from but here in the UK, the rules are stricter for distance sales than for face-to-face. You just need to be sure (a) you use a credit card and (b) it's a business, and you're pretty well protected.

No ...I agree .
I read about enough ebay scams on this forum alone never to buy anything off ebay.

To be honest I can`t see that there are any advantages over buying from a reputable dealer that you know and trust.

I can appreciate that viewpoint. Especially with more expensive items, the risk in buying via ebay can get discouraging.

It pays to be patient and knowledgeable of how ebay works. It's no more likely you'll experience problems with an ebay seller rated 99.5%+ and with lots of feedback than you would experience with B&H. A lot of scammers sell on ebay, but a lot of honest people willing to let their stuff go at a good price sell there as well.

I suppose I was being a bit harsh simply because I`m not knowledgeable about how the thing works.

I tend to buy my photography stuff through UK dealers and books ect through Amazon.

Amazon appears to offer security even when using third party sellers.

From what I`ve read ...mostly on this forum ...ebay seems to offer very little in terms of protection.

It's pretty comparable, though can be a headache if you don't have the patience to deal with the process. I recently returned a $1000 lens to an overseas ebay seller and it was thankfully much easier than I thought it would be. Paypal purchases, i.e. 99% of ebay purchases, receive the most protection. Paying into your paypal account via credit card affords you even more protection from your CC company.

But like Joe, dealing with other RFFers is my favorite...we just have the best taste 😀

The more people who are afraid of eBay, the more deals there are for me. 🙂

I 'won' the auction in question, btw. No one will be scammed and the account will be restored to its rightful owner.

Amazing how easily people fall for phishing scams and give up their passwords...some people just shouldn't be on the interwebs perhaps...but they would probably fall for more traditional scams too guess.

I sell on Ebay and I am not a scammer. I just bought a camera from Frontman via Ebay and I know he is not a scammer. I'm sure there are other members here that sell on Ebay that are not scammers. The idea that Ebay is not a good place to buy stuff does not apply to everyone and everything. And I see a lot of people who sell stuff on Ebay that have no idea what that are selling, like estate sales, that may underprice their items. Best you ask a lot of questions if something looks to good to be true.

"We're writing to let you know that the following listing was removed and the item is no longer available:

271247357385 - Leica M9 digital rangefinder camera

The listing was removed because the item appears to have been listed without the account holder's permission. At this time, we're restoring the account to its original owner. You're no longer obligated to pay for the item."

I buy cameras online, but with eBay you can never be too cautious. I always describe my listings down to the last detail and only buy things that can be returned...haven't had any trouble so far.

I've been buying and selling on eBay since 1999 with no major issues. Some purchases in the hundred's of dollars. I have never lost money but my complaint is those sellers who do not communicate nor provide tracking numbers even when the buyer asks for it.

Two requirements I would like to see eBay start is that all sellers be required to use eBay shipping for all of their sales. That way the buyer automatically gets tracking information...and the seller must ship within 3 business days instead of waiting a week or more like a lot of sellers do..

I don't use Ebay but why not using the Internet as a whole, many very reputable sellers (not to mention the largest book shop in the world) use the Internet as their main tool for selling stuff. I have been buying a lot of times on the Net and so far (knock wood) never any problem. Never used Ebay for anything more expensive than 9.99 US$ tough...

Bought and sold lots of stuff on eBay. Had to ask for about 3 returns, no problems selling. Just got a great nikon titanium f2 and just returned a terrible chrome F2. Here at RFF I bought a $2000 lens that i had to return to Australia from Canada and it went missing and Canada post worker screwed up my insurance so I only got $200 back. Also bought filters that never arrived, the seller said he'll send again (how do you send something again???) but he refunded me when that didn't arrive either.
