What a pain!

After a coworker (whom I really don't talk to) saw a picture I took as my wallpaper, he immediately approached me and asked what camera I used. When I told him that I shoot film and showed the Yashica 124G TLR I used to take the picture, he just looked immediately pissed. The coworker confessed he spent $600 for wedding pictures where several files were just the same shot of one moment. "It was no good," he said.

I only shoot weddings for really close friends, and gift them the negatives and scans. Some people don't really know it's film, and immediately ask if it's the top-of-the-line DSLRs that were used for my shots, when it's "just" a Kiev4 or a Retina IIC using really fast film.

PS: S3 pro is Super when you are looking for digital camera for weddings... But for me... It's all about the FILM... I've just stuck with frame advance lever 😉

Roger, I did not realize that I am three years older than you are.

The D3 is lighter than the F2+motor drive. I never had a problem lugging it around for hours. Add a 300mm F4.5 Nikkor-H to it, and it was around 10 pounds. I do prefer RF's, and would use the M3 or Nikon SP at a wedding. The M3 will be at Nikki's next piano recital. It's very quiet.

The man is obviously talented - whatever the medium, and people in this category are not usually fiercely fanatical about tools!....'horses for courses'!....some of the earlier replies, and similar ones - in some other recent threads, are aptly summed up in the title - "what a pain"!

The problem has been a reaction to the flu shot. You know those lists of symptoms that go from 'frequent' to 'infrequent'? Well, I've had most of them -- including headaches and (on a couple of frightening occasions) such severe dizziness on standing up that I had to sit or lie down again immediately, or fall over. I was very worried until Frances pointed out that these are classic flu shot reactions and fetched the piece of paper...

Mostly better now though (and previous post amended).

(Actually it may have been a typo. I remember considering 'over twice your age' instead of 'X years older'. Or then again there's just senility.)

read Jeff's bio - scroll down and you'll find:

I suspect that although he uses available light, he uses Canon dSLRs and not M's exclusively for his wedding work. To echo what has been said above, the man is clearly extremely talented with an amazing eye and the ability to translate that to beautiful images no matter what gear he chooses to use.

If you go to Jeff's blog, it seems he works with 1DMkIII's and now 1DMkIV's. If he was using Leicas, must have been for something specific.

Jeff Ascough used to be a dedicated M-user for his wedding photography some years ago. He was using the M-system when that video, included in "The Masters of Wedding Photography," DVD was created. (Terrific DVD, much to be recommended, BTW)

Shortly after that he switched to Canon DSLR's and has used them pretty much exclusively in recent years. It has been some time since he used Leica M's for his wedding photography.

Jeff is an enormously skilled photographer. And one more example that it's far less about the equipment one uses than about the guy using it.

What ever "Jeff's" physical motivation..it is that "his" final shift away from the DSLR Platform...is an irritation of a creative itch. As long as he feels and see a breathrough in his final image...then he has made a step up to a higher creative expression. I cant even bear to attend a wedding let alone the pressure of shooting at one. So I see his development as stepping through a doorway that should allow him to change his entire perspective of the wedding event as a visual moment. If that comes true...it will lead others as well.

But when you leave a specific creative paltform for benefits of another that is a major artistic statement.

as an amateur as well, i have only used the d-200 once or twice in the past year.

also have used an f5 on several occasions.

have used the leica every day since purchase over a year ago. back to film, couldn't be happier.

Surely the customers decide if the output is suitable by voting with their wallets and my feeling is that the majority of wedding photo consumers (right or wrong) will be happier with clean precise digital.

I'd be curious to know what percentage of weddings are shot with film still ... it can't be very high I wouldn't think and if a DSLR and compact zoom is going to cause a twenty eight year old's body this much stress then go to the gym, build up those neck muscles ... man up a little please! 😛

On a more serious note ... this job was screaming out for an M9 surely! 🙂

I shoot all my weddings with film and a lot of my peers also do so... In my case, the decision of shooting with a film M (and about 95% of it in B&W which gets printed in beautiful fiber by either myself or a master printer) is tightly coupled with my style of working and approach to documenting a wedding.

The beauty of it all is that there are clients for every style and approach and in order to be a successful business person one must effectively have a brand that represents what you are all about and constantly work on targeting the audience that you want to commission your work. Whether you use film or digital, Leica Ms or DSLRs is irrelevant as any option will yield fantastic results in capable hands.

Try shooting a big honking DSLR every day and you will really know shoulder pain! With a small prime it's not to bad. An L series zoom? Oh yeah, thats a joint killer! I love the images I get with my DSLR's but I don't like using them nearly as much as a rangefinder.
