I am new to film. Currently I'm trying to scan my negatives using my Plustek 7600i. I keep getting these smears/black outs. The pre scan shows up fine. It's just when I hit scan and get the final file it shows these weird aberrations. Please help me figure this out. Most notably on top of his head and bottom left corner

Most likely you are getting those aberrations as result of the film not laying flat. Make sure that the film is lying relatively flat, which is easier said than done with some films that curl bad. You can try reversing the film as well . The best option is to use a sheet of glass preferably a non-Newtonian type) in a flat bed scanner to make the film lay down flat. But your Plustek dedicated film scanner may not allow that.
Scanning can be a real pain in the end. But you will get the hang of it.

If youre scanning B&W, make sure IRD (or whatever the IR scratch detection on your scanner is called) is turned off.

I believe it is indeed the IRD, Peter. I'm not certain but I downloaded the trial of vuescan and the negative scanned just fine. I also think that I like vuescan much more than silverfast and will probably purchase it. Thanks again!

Indeed this is caused by using infrared dust and scratch removal (ISRD) on silver halide based film. If you are using Silverfast you can try SRD to remove dust and scratches or do the clean up in program like Photoshop.
