What are you listening to at the moment?

Andrea Chenier by Umberto Giordano, ACT III "Nemico della patria" with Ettore Bastianini... an everlasting voice for opera lovers like me *_*

Beethoven op 54 second movement Artur Schnabel. Stunning playing: some very fast tempos, occasional inspired wrong notes and the glissando perpetuum mobile of this movement is arresting. I nearly crashed the car the first time I heard it. I've played my other favourite set just now, the earlier set of Kempff, where this movement is very articulated with a beautiful bell like upper voice, but Schnabel keeps all voices within the whole, with the bass the only emphasis at times. I had scarcely noticed this sonata before. I've now played this movement four times. In another four and half minutes it will be five times. This was at the beginning of disc seven. I just finished hearing the Hammerklavier and was ready for the final stupendous disc of the set. And it isn't there! Fortunately the record store has other copies and I am off to get the missing disc. The genius of Beethoven. What a world.
