What are you listening to at the moment?

I've been getting back into the acid house and hardcore breakbeat techno I love so much. Sometimes out of convenience to others I stop listening to it for awhile but then I hear something like "Flash" by Fix or "Downfall" by Armando and I realize it'll always be my favorite.

I've also been listening to the "The Man Machine" and "Computer World" albums by Kraftwerk a lot.

and I've also picked up this kitschy/sleazy gem at Goodwill and it's barely left my record player:

There's a really amazing version of the second movement of this done on a yamaha synth chip from an early 90s arcade machine --

Probably my favorite version! Very Wendy Carlos.
I can't listen to the 7th without thinking about Zardoz (a great movie greatly misunderstood). The youtube clip does sound like Wendy Carlos superficially: I have Switched-On Bach somewhere. The modulation of this 1982 game chip is pretty dismal, however - far from real musical sythesizers of this era (pre Fairlight). I'm extremely fond of Gary Numan, and am listening to his "Telekon" (1980) daily. He is the master of a syth sound that maintains analog interest.

Much unlike photography, I love the gritty digital ugliness. Gary Numan is one of my absolute favorites, I love Tubeway Army and "The Pleasure Principle" is a great combination of real drums and perfectly spooky synths.

Then you must pick up "Telekon" as it is a masterpiece, and no clone of earlier work. With his synthesizer oeuvre, it's easy to forget that he's a pianist, not just a keyboard hack. One extra track on the CD is "Down In The Park" from Replicas for solo piano. Unreal. Piano gets prominent play on this album.

Just watched (YouTube) Joan Osborne and the Funk Brothers doing What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? Fabulous piece of work !

Shelby Lynne "Just a Little Lovin'". Wonderfully recorded on 2" analog tape. Her singing, however, is a little boring for my taste...

3 Cool Cats - Ry Cooder from the Chavez Ravine concept album.

What is Chavez Ravine? Google or Bing it and turn off the news.
