What are you listening to at the moment?

Before Hollywood did what it normally does and made a somewhat pointless remake of the Japanese anime movie "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) there was this theme / incidental music by Kenji Kawai - from the original anime. Well, I suppose technically it is still around. (Aside - why does Hollywood have to be so damned derivative in everything it does. Their business model seems to be nothing much more than copying good original ideas and remaking them into turgid and predicable nonsense with a silly pop culture twist. Rant mode off. 🙂 )

The music is evocative and rather mystical and the scenery which accompanies it in this video clip shows very clearly how the makers used Kowloon / Hong Kong as their model for the Ghost city. If you have been to Hong Kong you will probably recognize the similarity to some locations. And even if you have not, you may enjoy the music. I know I do.

I recently started to listen to various songs by The Sundays, such as: Hideous Towns, Another Flavour, Leave This City, Homeward, Folk Song and Through The Dark and several others. I'd like these and the others more if the singer's voice was higher in the mix (it's sometimes hard to hear her voice, let alone tell what she's singing), if the guitars were less trebly, and I'm not quite sure how to explain this, when the songs go to a louder bit her voice can get a bit "insistant". That ain't the correct word but it's the only one I can think of. I could've a bit too trebly but she can sing high notes well but mainly when the songs are in there quiet bits.

I've also been listening to parts of an unreleased album called "Thousand Mile Blues" by a group that used to be called "Monoland" but that had a name change to "Sapphire". If you search on youtube for " monoland/sapphire " you'll find the seven tracks that are on there. They are: Old Town, Harbour Town, Crashing Down, Turning Grey, The Next Step, The Rain Falls For You and The Valley.

IF anyone listens to The Valley, could you please write down what you think she sings and let me know? As far as I can tell some of the Lyrics are:

"I threw it over the shoulder,
I was in the line of fire but
I felt sure they wouldn't fire on me.
And why? I was far too poor."

This is another group in which the guitars tend to be a bit too trebly for me but with a bit of fiddling with my soundcard graphic EQ and the speakers bass and treble pots I can get them to reasonable level.

Congratulations on the dumbest-ever response to my post. Many moons ago, when I started my career in an international environment, my mentor explained that abbreviations are a source of confusion and irritation in an international environment. I suppose that, either you never had such a mentor, or don't realize that not everyone lives in Oregon. Cheers, OtL
