What are you reading?

Anyone into Thomas Pynchon?

I've read Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day. have no idea what either meant.

Currently re-reading Don Delillo's Underworld.

On the photography front, I'm reading a Phaedon book titled Art and Photography.

I'm reading several history books now.

Kingmakers: The Invention of the Modern Middle East by Karl Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac.

Our Oriental Heritage, volume 1 of Will Durant's "Story of Civilization".

Julius Caesar by Philip Freeman

I usually have 3-5 books at a time I am reading.

You may have heard of Orientalism by Edward Said. Excellent book that puts imperialism in its place. I went down that road in college and am happy I did.

Interesting note about John Stuart Mill in the opening chapter... He never believed his theories of utilitarianism could apply to Indians. No coincidence he was British and the Indians were under British rule at the time.

I know the Durants. That's a big series of big books. Ariel gets involved in later volumes. I think along with her contribution to the text, I think she was responsible for most of the imagery editing.

One if my favorite quotes is from Will Durant:
“A lust for power underlay all forms of political behavior.”

I have the full set, except the one on the Reformation. I loaned it to a friend who disappeared with it about 12 yrs ago.

Currently rereading On the Road by Kerouac. Seems much more sexist this time around...

Also reading, Footnotes in Gaza by Joe Sacco. Anyone interested in documentaries portrayed through the comics media should check his work out.
