it was such a simple question...
i have my kit but with the ever changing technology that is out there, ever changing and quickly changing i might add, it seems that many folk would be making changes to their street kit...i was curious.
you know...these are not life altering questions...just questions to pass the time and see what other shooters are thinking & doing.

Seriously, though. any answers to this question are pointless.
Some say "small camera" yet Martin Parr shoots with the large one.
Some say "rangefinder" yet Pinkhassov shoots inexpensive DSLR
Some say "silent" yet Bruce Gilden is anything but.
And so on and so forth.

Its a question of your own style to shoot on the street I think.
For me cameras with a tilting display are working very well because they can bounce around your neck,
you can frame them like a TLR and smile and shoot... 😀
My smallest setup this way is a Fuji X-M1 and it does a good job.

Doesn't have fast or any AF for that matter but as long as there's decent lighting I really like the combination of the my M8 and Summaron 3.5cm F 3.5 LTM.

Joe I know what I prefer for me but that doesn't mean it is right for anyone else. I have shot street with a 500 C/M and a 50 CF FLE and many like Rollei's and I can see the attraction.
At this point in time I prefer a true rangefinder. A lens with really good DoF scales for hyper focusing and I tend to see in B&W so for me it's a Leica MM and a 35mm lens. That may or may not be best for someone else. But if you tend to see in B&W and with a slightly wide FoV that is natural then maybe it could work for you. For me and the way I work it is nice to be able to move from 3200 ISO the 320 ISO from one frame to the next and having really readable DoF scales.

I agree that focus and dof scale is very useful for street shooting. Just set your zone and move into it, or wait for the subject to move into it, and shoot. It's the only thing faster and more reliable than AF.

Yes that's why I prefer it over auto focus. It's immediate. At f/11 with a 35mm lens I have everything from about 5 ft to about infinity in focus.

The photo was created in Marfa, TX. He was a local. I'm guessing he cleans motel rooms, dragging his gear down the street.
It's a funky little town, very cool (culture-wise, not meteorological). They have a late-night grilled cheese parlor.

Going STRICTLY by the criteria defined in the OP, I honestly would not have a "go to" camera.
If I can get a pass on the "must be be digital" criterion, I would choose my ZI and ZM Planar.
If I can get a pass on the "smallish" criterion, I would choose my D800e and my new Sigma 50/1.4 ART (or the Sigma 35/1.4 ART).

Phone, lately. With me anyway, looks so casual, wide angle and fixed focus, operates completely silently without mandatory shutter sound. If I can't make keeper with it then no other camera will help me, assuming I don't need very different FOV from 28mm.
