What camera would you choose as a special gift?

I would go with a nice Rolleiflex too. It is a great classic camera. You can add a medium format camera to your equipment, and it will complement your Leica gear.

I was also thinking of a lens or some other accessory, including perhaps an enlarger if you don't have one (and want to do wet darkroom), perhaps a Jobo system (if you want to do film), or a photo mounting kit. But a different camera isn't a bad idea either. If you are thinking MF or LF, consider a good folder, including some of the RFs. Just my $0.02 since it is a personal decision.

For the rich ones...

Rolleiflex
Plaubel Makina
Leica MP
Hasselblad Xpan

Cameras that I will most probably never buy for myself out of my pocket as they have their alternatives that are much cheaper, but I'd probably jump through the roof if I was given one.

a plaubel makina if its me portable with beautiful rendering and not too expensive buying used. for now my rolleiflex mx evs will serve that need. it takes beautiful photos just a little slow(er) in operating. A Makina will prob be as fast as the leica.
For leica lens i doubt anything will improve from what you already have (unless its super exotic like noctilux or fast wide angle glass).

That "battered M6" was pristine when I sold it to you 😉, what an earth have you been doing!? 😀

I'd also suggest forgetting digital if you'd like longevity and it possessing some sentimental or extra pleasure when using due to the circumstances. Budget is of course key, unless (and having met you I can't imagine this to be the case) you're happy to rudely define their spending parameters.

For me, the suggestions of going MF or LF seem like an interesting avenue - perhaps the generally slower nature of using such cameras will also help to make it that little more special insofar as it won't be an every day user, perhaps more for special projects or for when you really want to 'get away from it all' and do something completely different and very possibly incredibly relaxing.

Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy your gift

What an amazing response, thank you so much!

And so many things I've never heard of, sending me to google.. I wonder does Frank P's suggestion win prize of most opulent? Although an Alpa also looks a wonderfully exotic beast.

I can confirm for posterity that when OurManinTangiers sold me his M6 it was pristine... Like one of those ones people buy to put on a shelf or in a safe. No sense in which it already looked like it had been to hell and back.

The honest truth is I'm not quite sure of what the budget might be and must find out with delicacy. Not a situation I've ever been in before.

But I am enjoying the desert island quality of these responses!

MF is interesting. I have had access to a Hasselblad for a little while, as one was used in a production of a play of mine and then hung around. Such a gorgeous machine but I didn't find myself using it often, perhaps because of a lack of familiarity or having no skill in focusing it. But I'll read about these other suggestions, never held a Rollei etc.. Not sure how much I'll use it.

Really my major use has been black and white with the M6 and a couple of lenses, an m9 in the same manner (and trying to learn to use colour better) and the wonderful 105mm lens with the nikon.

Thank you so much for your kind replies, if I end up getting nothing I've learnt of a good few things...

Square-format Hasselblads are beautiful with standard 80/2,8 lenses and hopelessly ill balanced with just about everything else. Never got on with Rollei TLRs (or any TLRs) either. It's intensely personal.

Linhofs are nice. (I still have three, heavily modified 6x9cm ST70, Technikardan 4x5 inch, Technika 5x7 inch). But would they suit what you want to do?

johannielscom's suggestion is one of the best yet: "get a camera that can improve on what they loved about your photography to start with!"

DO NOT imagine that a camera you've never used will be one you'll use if you get it: I really don't use my 12x15 inch Gandolfi much. Or my 5x7 Linhof. The difference between what you think you'd like, and what you'd use, can be far bigger than you'd think.

Cheers,

R.

My wish list camera: a 5x8 Chamonix convertible camera with 4x5 reducing back and 5x8 holders. Why 5x8? The Golden Mean: absolutely aesthetically appealing ratio of width to length. Nearly anything you compose within the frame is visually perfect. It is simple to contact print a stunning image with no need to enlarging.

If I could just find some one to buy it for me!!

I would suggest either a Rolleiflex with Planar or Voigtlander Bessa II with Heliar. Both made a huge impression on me. Fortunately for me, I was able to purchase both of them very, very cheap, but seeing results on negatives was a real eye-opener. But that was for me...
