What car do you drive your camera around in and is it a he or a she?

That brings back a memory from 2001 when we were in Spain on vacation, and rented a Fiat Punto to haul us and our cameras around. It did fine. We spent most of one afternoon hiking up to the ruins atop the hill behind Málaga, and couldn't face walking back down in the dark, so called a taxi. From the inn up there, we pointed to the "Punto verde" parked on the street far below to show the taxi driver where we wanted to go. He was reluctant to go near enough to the edge of the cliff to see... 🙂

All this talk of cars with names and whether a car is "male" or "female" had me re-read Isaac Asimov's short story "Sally" (in his collection "Nightfall and other stories"). By the end the whole concept is somewhat, well, disturbing. It would certainly discourage me from anthropomorphising, which is how I remembered the story and why I re-read it.

In "Sally" a declaration is made along the lines that convertibles are female and sedans are male. Take from that what you will.

Ha! We had one of those when I was a kid. It was traded in for a 2-tone green '53 Chevy 4-door and then, later, a '59 Chevy Bel Air (the Batmobile!)...😀

About 20 years ago, I had a nice, original 1950 Chevy Fleetline Deluxe fastback 4 dr... 216 six and three-speed...

Anyone else growing tired of modern cars? My wife has a 2010 VW GTI and it's great fun to drive, but the level of electronic interference/background noise is tiresome, including a stability control system that often spoils the fun and can't be fully disabled. And it's nice that electronics offer so many options, I suppose, but yeegads, so many of them are pointless distractions. I don't want to have a dialog with my car, thanks. Or am I just reaching geezerhood? 😀

The beauty of all these auto electrical systems (from a dealers point of view) is that when they go wrong you can't fix them yourself so have to go to the dealer and spend money.
Time was that with a hammer, spanner and screwdriver you could fix most things yourself. That's why Land Rover Defenders are still so popular. They are so agricultural and basic in concept that anyone with a mind to, can do all their own maintenance.

Well that just confirms that I'm right to call my Land Rovers by girls' names. One can be converted to an open air vehicle in 10 minutes, the other takes another 20 minutes.

Looking to sell my main ride, 2008 BMW 335i. It has only 12K miles and has already blown three tires and a wheel. Extremely low aspect tires. Also, I have to worry about running the front end into anything higher than an ant. It is quiet, fast and solid, but it drives me batty. Next up, but waiting for the new engine to be introduced, the Ford Edge 2.0 EcoBoost AWD. Anyone want a like new sports coupe?

I drive a '99 Toyota MR-S. An absolute blast to drive through a good twisty road, but I'm totally over it's impracticability. I'm currently getting it tidied up for sale. Looking to replace it with a Mercedes W108 of some sort. Probably a late 60's 280SE.
