The photographer was Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky, and you can read about his technique here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergey_Prokudin-Gorsky#Photography_technique

I think the Library of Congress archives allow you to download scans of his images, and attempt to produce these colour images yourself through PS. There is a step by step that someone posted online, that shows you how to do it. http://www.najakito.com/~john/Tutorials/

It was! And then the world and everything in it, along with the photographs already taken, turned color some time in the 1930s.

Gosh, I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

I too was looking for color fringing in the edges.... But, NONE!

I think, in a slightly different & modified way, Kodachrome slides worked similar: Overlay of three (?) BW layers, each sensitive to one of the three colors and during processing the color is added specifically to the layer to result in the colored frame.

Not exactly the same technique, I think, but there is a book called "The dawn of the color Photograph" with images from Albert Kahn. When I saw the images of old russia the first time, I found the book and the images very similar. Check it out, great book, although the color photographs there are not from russia, but from all over the world.
