I bought this on ebay because it looks like it might be the basis for a hand-held 4x5.
Can anyone help me out with the origins of this thing?

Looks like it could have been designed for copy work on a stand.
Possibly a Polaroid MP-3 / MP-4?

The whole in that cap thing is supposed to be copal 0.

We have a similar looking setup on our older scanning electron microscopes. It screws down onto a hole made in a work surface and images a CRT which sits below. The ones I've seen are a little deeper but quite similar. There is a lens at the base - what type I don't know.
