What do you do for a living?

I'm one of those people people love to hate. I'm am a government regulator. Specifically, I am the technical person for the liquid waste program (i.e. septic systems) for the New Mexico Environment Dept. I'm the person who tells you not to put your developing chemicals into your septic tank. My education is in Forestry and Wildlife; accidently got into sewage treatment in the late 70's and can't seem to get out of it. Something about it just sticks to you.

I'm a software engineer for Intel. {

computers all day then I come home and
work on computers here.

I take pictures hoping they turn out
nice. But that's rarely the case.

huh, never expected that there are so few IT People :). Nevertheless I fit into the sterotype, doing embedded systems for cars.

No I don't want to be a professional photographer, because this would take the fun out of it. To earn money with photography is imho a hard job.

I chop up stuff with industrial lasers (mining related). I can't say much more than that (NDA thing). If only I could take my cat to work, I could pretend to be a James Bond villain :D

Mymy, so many different backgrounds.

I'm a second-line support "technician" for a Dutch bank's IT department. My group is specialised in storage solutions, backup and restore of data, and disaster recovery. We have too much work that's unrelated to our specialisation (meaning we also do system engineering and maintenance).

My wife and daughter live 8000km away in Mongolia, though hopefully we'll be reunited within 6 months time.

I wish I had more time to do photo projects in Mongolia. I'm thinking of applying for a grant for a project on the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar, and I've been asked if I'm interested in shooting tsam masks and items for an upcoming book on that subject.

After finishing high school I work temporarily as a gardener's assistent on a graveyard, for hotel room service, as a shop assistent, did my 1 year stint of obligatory military service, worked as a security guard for too long, attended uni for 1 year, and college for 3 years (never finshed any degree).

In fifteen years, by the time I'm 50 years old, I plan to retire and live in Mongolia. I better have saved a stack of money by than, and learned most there's to know in photography as I plan to spend the rest of my days there shooting. In the meantime I'll stick with my current employer, try to do some photo projects, and start a small travel agency and translation service together with my wife.

Seems I'll be busy until I die. :)

I work with mentally handicapped people (mostly older, mostly both physically and mentally handicapped); 7 handicapped people live at the place, and I (and my co-workers) do everything, from cooking, hous-hold chores, hygiene to arranging medical examinations, leisure time activities, etc.
I also study pedagogics at the Univ. of Vienna (to have some theoretical background for my work) - used to study English and Philosophy (even spent a year as exchange student at UC Santa Barbara), but never finished that, because I switched majors when I fell into my new job (got there in my civil service - that I had to do like all male Austrians if they don't want to do military service).

Oh, and BTW, I used to do all kinds of diverse stuff while studying - working in a factory that produces fire-proof bricks for furnaces, entering data in computers, waiting tables at a wine-bar, packing catalogs for a travel bureau, being the tour-guide for a group of American students on a 37-day trip through Europe from London to Athens, etc...

I'm in the very last month of my 4-years PhD studies in applied physics, at Eindhoven Univ. of Technology, the Netherlands. Magneto-optic effects and (ultra)fast magnetization dynamics on the microscopic scale. Should finish till the end of the year...
I won't.
So i'll be back next year, at least for a few months. Originally, i'm Hungarian (but born and lived in Romania for the first 23 years out of the 28 i am now), finished a bachelor of science physics degree in Romania (i'm entitled to teach physics), did 3/4 of a Masters in Groningen, the Netherlands and then continued here with the PhD. You can see me/us here: http://www.fna.phys.tue.nl/

I have no faint idea what I will do when I really really finish here. Since my girlfriend lives in Budapest, Hungary, i'll most probably move there and (try to) find a job that fits me. Or, we could move both to New Zealand and pick kiwifruits for the half of the year, then continue with shaving sheep (sorry, dunno the correct word) just for the change.

What I know for sure, is that one day i'll develop my own black-and-white. Hopefully, print it too.

Pherdi, it is 'shearing sheep' (hey, at least sometimes my former English major comes in handy ;) )
BTW, my girlfriend is half-Hungarian, so I go to Budapest with her regularly, to visit family!
So, Romanian-born Hungarian - I guess you are from the Siebenbürgen/Erdély region?

Roman

Thanks for the correct expression, Roman -i never knew it :)
Now i can apply for a sheep-shearing job with more confidence hehe

Yes, it's "Siebenbürgen", "Erdély" (nice spelling from a non-hungarian, Roman), or, in g'd old english, Transylvania. Please folks, skip the Dracula question. :rolleye:

Pherdinand, maybe there's a market for shaving sheep in NZ as well. Must be pretty prickly all that woolly hair. :)

Hey Roman, is that your smiling face in your avatar?

I took a break from university studies to be a weather observer in the Air Force...

Doug, I was stationed at Holloman AFB, NM, back in the late 1970's. I was lucky enough to be able to witness the sending up of a weather balloon and took quite a few pictures, all B&W. I was there as a guest of one of the Weather people so I had a close-up view. It was an interesting event to watch and record.

I work for the Veterans Affairs Hospital here in sunny Florida. I am a database adminsitrator. I get to build databases all day for testers....

Now the funs stuff. I shoot interiors for a home builder here and also for a home designer. I am the sports photographer for a local college. I also picked up a job shooting classic cars.

I am so afraid to take the leap into full-time photography. I put in about 1 to 5 hours per week. My accountant said that as long as I reinvest my profit into my business, my taxes will be lower. Hmmm....what can I spend my cash on now? :)

Roman,

Its been years since I have been to Vienna. How often do you go to a music store? I need a recording of a piano work by Roman Statkowski and I vcant find it anywhere. Since you live in the music capital of the world, maybe you can keep aneye out for me next time you go in a store. :)

Thanks,

JT

I manage power equipment store in Southern California. We sell and service commercial mowing and landscape equipment, selling mostly to landscape contractors. I have done this, in one form or another since I was 12, working in my Dads shop in Chico, Northern California.
I have four kids, (that I know of),

Hm, I'm in IT. I sell, consult and integrate Document Management Systems. That's one reason why I trust digital storage media :).
In my sparetime I'm editing for a local magazine, mostly party pictures on a website as some allready know.
In my other sparetime I'm working with two friends on a photo related website which is for whoever who takes pictures with whatever and wants to chat about that.
In between I like parties.
