I can take photos with it.
Second reason would be the design, the handling, the slowdown while taking pictures compared to auto-everything cameras... oops, that was more than the second reason
I simply like the camera and for me it is the end of a journey. Already having a Leica R kit I should have bought an M directly instead of looking around for not so expensive alternatives. That does not mean that I do not like my Bessa but a Leica is ... different.

I like the fact that my father now apparently enjoys using it -- he hasn't complained but then again it was a gift
. I also enjoy the fact that I no longer own a Leica and have dedicated my energy to Contax and Alpa, except for a superb set of Leitz binoculars and an equally fine spotting scope -- this is where I believe Leica truly excels (low light tests against Zeiss and Swarovski -- the Leica was a clear winner). Yes, what I like best is that the cameras are gone
.

The quality of the pictures I get from it.
And that's for many reasons, partially the sheer quality of the camera and lenses, partially becasue being all manual it forces me to think about my shots (i believe this point can't be stressed enough), and partially just because of the sheer satisfaction I get from using it. But all these add up to one thing - I get transparencies that just make me go 'wow'......
Sure, in theory I should be able to get this kind of shot from (say) an EOS 3 with L series glass - but I find that personally, I don't.
Of course, the next inevitable step following this path is a Linhof Technika.......

It gives me at least a 4 stop advantage over an SLR, and that shutter is silent running .... well, not actually silent, but it is a soft swish. And the 50 cron has a signature like no other ;-)

Ok, Im a newbie M lover, so I get a second go... :0
I love the fact that I've had it to days and it motivated me to get 2 bulk rollers and rolls my own film, and develop my first two rolls of B&W film.
I just dont understand why anyone would replace a darkroom with a computer screen... chemicals are fun!
Daniel.
PS. But to be honest, I would have just as much fun had a I got the Rollei 35RF. I think what is the most important thing Leica has introduced, is the way of taking photos... so good it can sustain multiple brands, but its all thanks to Leica.

at 54, with arthritis, it's easier to sit at the computer than stand in the darkroom.

This sounds odd to me.
A Leica and a veiwcamera are like cheese and chalk, small light and suitable for
candid the first, bulky and definitively usable only for certain works the second.
I do not have a Leica M nor I have a Linhof but I have a CL and a IIIg and a Combo and
a Speedgraphic and I don't have to think much in order to decide whether a rangefinder
or a viewcamera is what suits better a given work.

Ahhhh.....I meant this for one facet of photography only, for the full manual control.....for some shots I want more control than a fully manual 35mm gives me. (ie tilts and rises)
But yes, generally, I agree with you that there are circumstances for a rangefinder, and circumstances for a SLR, and circumstances for a view camera.

LOL......I'm sure Menvy is horribly contagious. I mean, look at you - exposed to it for a few hours on one day and now you can't shake it....

I also feel it's more about the glass than the body, although I have taken shots down to 1/2 second, handheld and well braced, that would have been impossible with some other cameras.
When I used my M6 the for first time I didn't understand what all the hooplah was about, it was only after shooting with it for a week or so and then going back to another camera that made me appreciate the body.

Build quality is the bottom line, it's why I traded my Bessa R and a lot of cash.
But, then again there's...

The M is not perfect but it is the most "complete" camera I have ever handled witch makes it perfect if it fits your way of photography and makes it horrible if it does not.

It's easy to carry and shoot with, and therefore carries a high likelihood that I will take it with me

That it is completely manual. You need to think, which improves the pics.
