As to cameras- Purchased new Hasselblad 500CM Classic kit with 80mm lens and back. Just couldn't be satisfied and kept "trading up." Still have the box it came in!
Cars: 1971 or 2 Datsun PL521 pickup. Purchased in 1989 and sold it when I purchased a new Jeep Cherokee. Wore the Cherokee out but miss the Datsun more.

Let's not get going about cars! I still have dreams about my "69 Triumph Spitfire. And though it was a nightmare in reality, British Leyland cheesiness at its worst, I so loved that car!
Beyond that, I'm seeing a lot of regret-filled posts here, including my own. Seems like one of the long-term effects of GAS. "Long GAS" perhaps?

I'm sure you can get a free, government-issue mule in el paraíso de Castro as consolation.
..and huge cost when you hold on to them
It all depends upon what you are holding onto. Lots of cars are very low maintenance, even collector cars. Judicious shopping applies to cars as well as cameras.
