What Do You Think of My Site?

I like it, Jon. It has a nice look to it. The only comment I have is a navigational one. I prefer the Back browser button to take me up one level, rather than to simply retrace all the previous pages I have viewed. There's probably a more succinct way of describing this, but I'm not aware of it.

Honestly, I do not like it. Pictures going round and round just don't do it for me. I think the photographs should speak for themselves and not the flash site you created. I am using high speed cable and speed is not an issue, but I can't imagine what dial-up users would experience with your design.

As with many things in life - simple is often better.
 
Jon, If the link is taking us to the "Home" page, it isn't obvious (from my laptop) that there is anything other than the seven rotating "Recent photos". I have to scroll down to view the menu items.

The "Home" link takes me to the image of the empty interior of the Cafe Sobica and not to what I'd expect to be the Home page (ie the one at the end of this link).

Layout, look and feel are very nice.

I like it.
 
There is something to be said for the criticism of the pics going round & round. It got a bit painful when I was trying to open them from that page. I started having to chase the buggers round. Still, it keeps me fit.

I'm sure they'll come up with something to knock our boots off.
 
I am not a web design guru but I am a graphic designer, so let me add some hopefully constructive criticism.
Using broadband the pics fly around way to fast and sort of induces vertigo - maybe slow them up a bit
When you open the site the most important thing is to see all the most important things without scrolling - like the bottom navigation is hidden, it needs to be in the first bit of the screen you see without having to scroll - and another thing if you want stuff at the bottom of the screen make it obvoious that something is down there - because at the moment it is not entirely obvious that you have to scroll - there is no indication that there is anything further down the page, maybe a scroll bar thing - just my two cents,

Positives - I like the reflections of the pics - nice
Like the understated design, refreshing in this day of jumping dancing flashing stuff
Like the grey highlighting the nav at the bottom.

Just a question will the spinning pics be the latest, because home takes you to more pics?? maybe I am slowed up after a day at the monitor??

I went with Expressions at www.my-expressions.com a couple of years ago. If you register your own personal domain name you can link it to your Expressions site seamlessly. That's what's in my signature.

This beta site is the next generation of Expressions.

Or ask the nearest eight year old to do it for you.
 
If you don't have titles or captions, or keywords on the page with each photo, web search engines will not be able to categorize your photos. You have your pages so that the captions are hidden until you click on a link, which is just not good web practice anymore. The search engine 'bot crawlers don't see images as anything, they can only read text. The search engine companies like the text to be easily readable (not black on black) or they will ignore your text or ban your site as spam. It's a good idea to avoid Flash animations and frames in web pages that you want to be easily found. I have some similar problems with my website I will need to address (I have navigational buttons that are image files not HTML text). I don't like the spinning images either, but that's a matter of taste.

But I still want to see what the web designer comes up with for the Lomo page with tag cloud concept so I can decide.
 
First, let me just say that I really like your work and your other website does a better job featuring it. Your photo's are more prominently displayed and in a much faster fashion. It's blog like, so I'm not bothered by the navigation as it is, but if you made any adjustments to this site, I'd place some persistent nav along the top.

Now as for the new site, the footprint of your flash animation is large enough that for most folks with a max display size of 1024x768, the main navigation is below the fold. So aside from clicking each image in the animation, they may not see more to your site.

I'm a huge fan of presenting your navigation up front and keeping it consistent throughout the site. I'm also a fan of flash, but not at the expense of A) losing persistent navigation below the fold and B) slowing down the user's experience unnecessarily.

I'm also a bit bothered by the right-side navigation - I kinda expect the 'Archives' list to be below the 'Galleries' list.

I have real difficulty with departure from the KISS school. In this post, you just explained succinctly why the site troubles me so much... All that movement. So here is my brutal summary.

"A very talented web programmer and an equally talented web designer, using your dime to deploy their trickery, on your web site".

What does all this talent of their have to do with displaying YOUR photography.

Sorry, but I find that I cannot spend time on this type of site. I don't begrudge you your right to spend your money on "talented" cyberjockeys, but it's rather scary from a marketing background of over 35 years to see people think that this is the way to market their own talent.
