Not having any experience with development by inspection, I turned the light on, saw that the negative was developing, turned it off, and continued developing as usual with the timer.
... without any effect to the negative?

Yes, you can use a dark green safelight for inspection, from a few feet away for a few seconds without fogging. It is difficult to see the image, I believe most look to see if density appears to look similar on both sides of the sheet.
