Not having any experience with development by inspection, I turned the light on, saw that the negative was developing, turned it off, and continued developing as usual with the timer.![]()
... without any effect to the negative?

Yes, you can use a dark green safelight for inspection, from a few feet away for a few seconds without fogging. It is difficult to see the image, I believe most look to see if density appears to look similar on both sides of the sheet.
