What films do you miss?

After a post to Gene about Scotchchrome, I started to remember about all the old films I use to enjoy but are no longer with us.

So post your favourites that are no longer with us and have been resigned to a history of a possible golden era in photography.

Here's the films I miss-

Agfa APX25- Eat your heart out Kodak TP, lovely fine grain and the new Ekfe 25 isn't the same. Still have three precious rolls left in the freezer. Very comparable to 4x5 ISO 400 prints and this is a 35mm sized film!

Kodak HIE Inferred in 120- Also known as fun game called “How IR proof is your film processing room”

The old Kodak Tri-X- Before they decided to cut back on the silver content. Still have a few pro-packs left over of both 35mm and 120. I even have a roll that expired in 1973. However I've almost completely changed over to Fuji's Neopan range.

Scotchchrome 1000- Grainy colour photos do work sometimes. However on the plus side I've found two possible replacements (Fuji XTRA 1600 with a two stop push or Agfa Optima 400 with a three and half stop push).

I'm already missing the T400CN, which, according to Popular Photography, was recently discontinued. I liked it better than the cheap, supermarket version (B&W Plus), but not less than the wonderful XP2 (impossible to find in my town). It was a good compromise film, though...

Stu, two films I used to shoot a lot were Kodak Panatomic-X and Agfachrome. I really miss both.

I also miss Kodachrome II and Kodachrome 25.

I shot a few rolls of Agfa IFF (or was it IIF). Wasn't that the predecessor of APX25?

Had some fun once with Kodak Royal-X Pan in 120. Developed in Dektol it was wonderfully grainy. Thought I'd try it again but the film disappeared ...

Good thread!

Yes, Gene, it was Agfa IFF, ISO 25, and I liked that one too. I don't know its relationship with APX25 as I'm not familiar with that.

I miss Verichrome Pan, a rather nice B&W film which seemed to me to have better tonality than Plus-X. And a bit odd that it was the Professional film and at the same time the emulsion offered at the other end of the usage spectrum in 620, 828, 126 and 110. I just shot my last frozen roll of VP 110, so that's the end of B&W for my little Pentax Auto 110!

I don't recall a Scotchchrome; perhaps it was marketed under a different name in the States? I do remember Sears offered a Kodachrome-clone named Dynachrome... might have been made for them by 3M?

One that I won't miss is Anscochrome; never did like the colors. I seem to recall a usefully fast ASA 500 version though.

But I think we have a wonderful selection of great films these days!

I guess my all time favorite to miss was Kodachrome 25. I also liked the Verichrome Pan too.

Another slide film I liked was a 500 asa, which I think was GAF. Grainy, but as I recall, a little better than Ektachrome 160 pushed to 640. The colors weren't always as good though.

GAF = General Aniline and Film; isn't that the same as Ansco? That may be the same grainy ASA 500 film I was recalling...

I miss Panatomic-X in 35mm. I used to bulk load it. I also miss Verichrome-Pan in 120 and Kodachrome 25 in 35mm.

I wish all manufacturers would quit making packaging and name changes that do not corrrespond with actual changes in emulsion. I can't tell what I'm buying from month to month because of name changes like Royal Gold to HD

I miss Verichrome Pan, Scotch 640T (but only a little bit) and Panatomic-X. I liked High Speed Ektachrome Type B as well, but that's long gone.

The *original* Fuji Reala. NOT the current one (superia reala), NOT the previous one (new reala), but the original which was available untill about 1997. It had a 'glow' that none of its successors have.

I forgot to mention liking the Panatomix X which I also used to bulk load. What great b/w film. There was also another from Europe, Elke or Efke, sold in both 35mm and 120. One of their films was an ASA 25 as I recall. I used some of that in my Mamiya Super Press 23. That was a nice film for big (16x20 and 20x30) enlargements.

Edit: I either got that from Freestyle or Spiratone. Freestyle I guess is still around. Sadly, Spiratone is missing as are the films we are lamenting.

Efke 25 is available in the US from JandC Photo:

It is supposed to be the licensed emulsion of Adox 15 which was purchased by Dupont and re-licensed. There is a long interesting history behind the film.

I did not know that Reala has been changed so many times recently. The best photo I have ever taken of my kids was done about 1994 on Reala. I told my kids to bury me with it because I would probably never make a better one. It almost glows from the frame.

I too love the Neopan films. Especially the 400 speed version. I use it all the time. Great stuff! I really miss the old Agfachrome 1000. Great when pushed a stop or two. That was wonderful stuff.

I miss Panatomic-X. In school I used my then new F2a with a Micro-Nikkor-P 55mm F3.5 (ate peanut butter for months to buy it) for all of the yearbook photos. Sharp. I still have the F2a after 25 years.
