what happen to the recent "which 4x5 camera to buy" thread?

Lat night he posted he'd found a Rodenstock 150mm f4.5. I knew that it wasn't a Sironar and had to be a Tessar formula. while good lenses they don't have much coverage. I posted that and stated it wouldn't allow any movements. he's now on LFF asking the same question about the Ysarex Rodenstock. Didn't believe my answer.

Well, nor do I. There are probably a dozen cameras I'd rather have, several of which I either own or have owned, or have at least used. And yes, I have tried Tachihara. Remember, I used to review these things for camera magazines.

Between you and I we have a century of professional experience. Being 16 years old doesn't even trump experience of that magnitude. Of course he can take or leave the advice but he should be decent enough to leave it for others.

Well, we all start out thinking that we know more than we do. We probably wouldn't dare start otherwise. I just wonder when the crossover comes: the realization that not only are we never going to know it all, but that we probably don't know more than a frighteningly small percentage of what there is to know. The best we can do is to know enough to use what we do know,

I did notice, he had a lot of threads and regularly got called out on these threads, the topic was useful for me too as ive been saving up for a 4x5 camera for a few months in order to stop relying on the colleges 4x5 and there was some great information there. I mean im young enough to replicate the scenario if anyone wants to recreate that thread 😛

As a alternative: if I asked the same question would it be possible to paste and copy and thus "safe" the given information?

Dear Jake,

Elegantly put. Have you looked at the Linhof Kardan Color? Apart from the fragile drive knobs, which can be Araldited back together (guess how I know), it's a well made, robust camera with enough movements for most practical purposes, and silly cheap for a Linhof.

Consider also an MPP Mk. VII. Join the MPP Users Club and I'd be surprised if someone wouldn't sell you a Mk. VII cheap...

And don't neglect the Kodak Specialist Half Plate (which also takes 5x7 inch and 13x18cm, and gives decent-sized contact prints (unlike 5x4). They're sometimes silly-cheap because people inexplicably prefer 5x4.

Elegantly put, Roger... the phrase 'ignorance is bliss' comes to mind.

That said, on this forum I'm constantly amazed of member's generosity of spirit in advising, assisting and sharing their experience and hard-won knowledge with those starting out on their photographic education.

A big thank you everyone who contributes: I've learned and gained insight into a multiple areas - not just photographic - that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Trouble is that after 10 threads deleted, people (especially the wise one) stop posting the information in hope that this time it will stick. No user (without moderator privileges) should be able to delete any post on a public forum. There are forums that even mods don't ever delete any post (they just lock the thread).

I guess we can all move past this and back to the contributing nature of this forum again, (you know , the search forum first before asking question, don't deny information that are useful to others, etc), forum etiquette I'd say 🙂 maybe mod can also lock this thread, if need be.

like brbo says would be nice to have the delete button disable/remove though...

He was breath of rather strange air that blew through RFF and drifted away. I quite enjoyed his dewy eyed enthusiasm because things can become horribly predictable around here at times. I half expected this final result though. i think with people like Justin we really needed to not be so judgemental and just accept him as he is ... or was! He wasn't offensive and there have been far worse in my opinion. Hale the individual I say ... whatever their quirks! lol 😀

I'm with Keith. He was super interested and excited. Sure lots of his questions were repetitive and he mostly heard what he wanted to, but isn't that what being young is all about? You learn from your own mistakes more than you learn someone else's.

On the matter of deleting posts/threads I think you should be able to delete your content, but others content. I'd be fine if there was no delete button at all. I've learned more from the archive than from starting my own threads.

Do we risk losing every post by Tom A (for example) in threads he didn't start? All that knowledge just gone? We have a huge archive of knowledge pooled from people who are no longer around, it'd be a shame to see it go.

Perhaps a wiki function on the site to transfer and archive the reference material might be a way forward. Sounds like more work I know!

A simpler option (unsure if technically feasible) would be to delete the a user reply or even original post, but retain the thread. Sometimes technology makes these things harder than they should really be.

Bit of a shame. I'm also on the lookout for a 4x5 and already have lens and filmholders so the thread interested me.

I understand locking threads if you ban a member but deleting threads looks a bit too harsh. I hope they are still present in the database and can be rescued.

Yes.

Mods can resurrect a thread like this, but what if nobody notices/remembers that a thread with a wealth of information has silently been deleted?!
