What happened here?

Hi folks,

I know I have seen this in an existing thread, but can't remember what the story was.

The last 12 frames of a roll of Rollei RPX 400 that I just developed (HC110B, 6 min @ 20C) have a blotch in similar spots on each frame; plus the frames look slightly odd, some very fine streaks on a couple:

Any explanation as to what caused it? I developed another roll in the same tank which turned out fine. Plus, the beginning of the messed up roll also seems fine.

I'm going to hazard to guess that those are due to bubbles sitting on the film during development, causing underdevelopment in the middle and over-development in the ring pattern.

You might need to adjust your agitation (use inversions rather than spinning, or rapping the tank against the table) to make sure all the bubbles are dislodged.
 
One of my teachers told us- after agitating, set the canister down with a sharp rap so it dislodges any of those bubbles. Worked well for me so far.
 
Well, I used a spinner, but I think did rap the tank anyway (I am paranoid).

If it was a bubble, why would it mess up 12 frames as opposed to two? I would have to have a series of bubbles, all at about the same spot.

So far a ghost is the only logical answer.

Ah, that could be. I didn't expect a drop would show up so "in focus", but actually it would have been on the filter, not the lens. I think you are right.

Now I say the drop is an interesting feature. ;-)

Hi. You are right, water drop on the lens would be not that "in focus" and "things" on the filter would rather caused local lack of sharpness as water or for that matter smudge of body oils will act like a diffuser. In any case light should reached film. This is more likely developing problem or manufacturing problem.
Anyway, the second pic you posted looks cool.

Looks like water on the lens/filter. It would show up more in focus than you might suspect if you were using a wide angle lens and were stopped down a bit. And it looks like you were doing both of those things.
 
Just an interesting point I'd like to throw in here- I was using a pin-hole lens on my Nikon DSLR last week. I know I have a couple spots on my sensor. Those spots came out crystal clear using that pin-hole lens where they were not very noticeable with any normal glass lens. It's weird to see how things like what's in focus can change like that.
