well said dmr.
i have little to argue with in what you said and how you said it.

(snip)

my challenge to all who want change for the better - tell us what you see as a really great photo site.

it's easy to criticize...but rise to the standard that dmr has set and tell us, not what you want, but what you think a great site looks like.

and then help us build it.

RFF forums and a flickr style gallery would do it for me. As far as the paid membership option goes, I can assure you that the three stars under my avitar could go away now and I wouldn't miss them one bit. I did not pay to be a premium member for any of the benefits and I could care less if anyone is or is not a paying member. I upload almost no photos to the gallery as of late and I have a whopping total of 6 mesages in my mailbox. I paid because Jorge needed the money and I felt he had more than earned it from me. I feel no superiority over anyone else here. I haven't seen that happen but if it does (did), that is when the moderators should haul out the baseball bats and have a home run derby. Elitest behavior is inexcusable.

(damn, I thought I was goig to try to hijack this thread. what happened?!?) 😉

Would the most of you prefer a site that is sterile, with nothing except polite and PC comments - or would you perfer a site with some color, where ppl are given the freedom to periodically take public and funny jabs (with no serious bad intent of course) at other members?

I'd also vote for a better forum software with gallery feature that approaches what you get with flickr.. but I guess nothing like that really exist...

Bill Mattocks may or may not be around but he just sold me some Chinese black and white film, which finally arrived in the post, that I'm pretty excited about using. As for the forum, I visit daily, randomly looking at the galleries for ideas, for inspiration. I haven't uploaded anything because I don't have a scanner and all my negs are in a terrible jumble. I am looking forward to Adobe's LIGHTROOM when it is finally released to help me, once I've digitized my images. I think this is a wonderful place to get information and exchange notes. Sometimes I wonder why we are spending so much time on the computer...speaking of which...

I just got a gorgeous Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.5 so I'd better get outside and shoot.

kind of depressing really
😉

You've never been a Nikon guy joe. That must be why.

RFF is a lot like life.. it's what YOU make it.

Ignore the trolls and the n'ere do wells and embrace those willing to participate in a positive manner (and this means posts as well) and you'll find that things haven't changed that much 😀

Cheers
Dave

In one of my numerous posts I said RFF is a bit like the pub where we meet every friday with the difference that my friends all use DSLRs.

This is a professional photographer and long time friend wo is one of the usual suspects and a good example for my way of a photographers gathering 🙂

wow - just saw my post had 65 replies..!!

I guess growth and change are envitable with anything. I founded the IDCC in 1996 ( Internet Directory of Camera Collectors ) and while hugely succesful, it became boring to me after a few years as it seemed little "new" information was generated.

Mind you, I am not complaining about RFF....just thought I noticed a distinct change from last year...it seemed more exciting, faster paced and loose....

Best

You are not alone in your assessment. I think that is how a lot of members feel.

But when half of the people now don't remember the old RFF, and the other half don't care .... well, the handwriting is on the wall.

Just think about the sheer volume of knowledge we've lost in the span of less than half a year from the numerous valuable departed members. Pretty sad to lose that wealth of knowledge in such short order.

And regarding your observation addressing the commercialism and potential sale value of this site? It's Jorge's site, so in the end, I wish him good luck and good fortune.

Here's a toast to the new commerical mini-Ebay 😎

Photonet's free (non-tiered) Leica forum listings are looking downright attractive and sensible by comparison. Never thought I'd hear those words.

Why are all the Tour de France threads moved to "and now for something completely different" and the World Cup threads permitted on the frontpage?

Any reason for that? Aren't they both equally OT if a move was required?

we have a tour de france thread? i missed that one completely.

as to the world cup thread...i thought about moving it but it seemed so popular that, after careful consideration, i gave it a special dispensation.

will this thoughtful act be held against my perfect prefectness?

joe😉

I have no idea which moderator moved it, but that might explain why you've missed it 😉

On the contrary, I like the World Cup thread on the frontpage, just wish the Tour de France ones were as well.

Your "perfect prefectness" is like the sun. One doesn't question it, one merely admires it 🙂

Putting "ANFSCD" back on the frontpage might be a good idea 🙂

Thank you, I was a bit afraid as to how this would be taken ... {sigh of relief}

it's a tough question though in that to maintain the site money was/is needed.

My suggestion is that if Jorge needs $$$ to keep the site alive, to do some creative thinking on ways to raise funds. (Actually, that should be everybody's job, not just Jorge's and Joe's.)

Having worked with many nonprofits over my 49-and-holding years, the one that is most obvious and very effective is voluntary donations. Just ask the Salvation Army how effective their fund drives are!

Another concept is to create what some fundraisers call a "candy machine", meaning something that provides a secondary small but consistent stream of revenue. Selling swag (a "Logo Shop") is one example of this. ("RFF" branded lens caps?) 🙂

One very obvious opportunity for this site would be to use the classified system on a commission basis. Undercut Ebag and charge 4%. I admit that I'm not a big gear trader, but I would get more of a warm fuzzy feeling dealing with a RFFer than J. Random Ebayer.

Commercial sponsorships. One of the other sites I infrequently frequent currently has 24 mini-banners on the home page (I count 7 here) and an online user count within 20 or so of the number on line here at this time. Some of the sponsors are here too, but not all of them -- if they are they are not very obvious.

(LOL -- Just don't get carried away with pop-ups and in-your-face ads! Just see www.lasvegastalk.com for an example of how NOT to do it!) 🙂 🙂

my challenge to all who want change for the better - tell us what you see as a really great photo site.

Ok, I'll accept this challenge.

As far as the format of the site or the gallery, I have very few complaints. Just maybe a bit more responsive to user requests to add or split forums (fora?) when needed. Maybe read the audience and create fora and divisions when threads in the general area indicate interest.

I actually like the gallery layout. I know there are some bugs in the software WRT sub-galleries and annotations and such, but those are minor. I know that Flickr seems to be the standard that galleries are judged against, but I like this one better. 🙂

Also, Jorge, I do like the general theme and appearance of the site. The dark backgrounds and neutrals do give it a sense of "brand" which sets this site apart from most photo sites, which seem to be on lighter backgrounds.

I don't have any specific ideas on this one, let me put this somewhat abstractly-- but what the site lacks is a sense of community that it once had. Maybe some online brainstorming on how to create more of a community spirit.

For the most part, the rank and file users here are great! There's almost always a warm welcome for somebody who announces as new, and if a new user has a problem, help is in abundance! 🙂

One thing I did think of is to try to raise everybody's awareness to the fact that this is a very international and cosmopolitan gathering. English is not the native language of all, and of those for whom it is, not everybody speaks the same dialect, nor shares the same idioms and slang. I have a feeling that misunderstandings sometimes arise and escalate from the misinterpretation of the written word.

And -- on the subject of community spirit -- get rid of that {f-bomb}ing two-class user system! Ash-can it! Bury it in the Chernobyl sarcophagus! Send it to Pluto, freight collect, with no return address!

That's what I can think of right off hand ... I'm sure I'll have more thoughts right after I hit the "submit" button. 🙂

"Camera and Coffee"; " how to improve?"; "Provia 400 @ 3200"; " Let's create a FSU Frankenstein..."; "Beyond Words: Photographers of War" or "Willy Ronis and HCB": yes, all are RFF threads. That's not bad...🙂
Why complaining about the site and the declining interest when there are high quality threads. The last two I mentionned were very interesting; who among those who complain did participate in?
The fact is we are numerous and we can't all have the same interest. Some are interested in the RD-1 and I'm not. I'm interested in Willy Ronis, some are not. That's just diversity! You don't like the Classified (I'm not fond of this), just don't look at it, it's quite simple.
Now, I hear again that the new members are spoiling the RFF ... it's always the same old story and it's really getting annoying.
I'm fine with this site. I did not financially contribute but I don't feel a second-order member. I try to do my best to participate in threads (even though I should refrain myself from writing some stupid things 😉 Jenni) and to share my pictures (even though they are no good).

Mojitos? One please I need it 😀

SP 2005, oh nice! 🙂

Football? we should take and share photos of exuberant supporters; what do you think, Jenni?

The World Cup, being the most popular sporting event, well, in the world is there for all of our members around the globe. It too will be moved in a few days to the ANFSD forum. There are many popular events, this one seemed appropriate to leave for our community as we are as diverse as the opinions expressed there suggest we are.
