It takes me at least 6 months of internal debates to decide what my next big buy will be.
(At the moment, a Fuji XE-1 keeps popping into my mind, gets bumped out
by the X100 and D5100 that I already own, then pops back in again.)

I am wonder how long do you take to make a camera / lens decision?

And, if you are seriously thinking of a new purchase right now . . . what are you going to buy ?

I deliberated for the best part of a year or more about getting a Sigma DP. I was interested in the earlier camera and then had a burst of renewed interest when the Merrill was released. I hung around the relevant threads for quite some time looking at the posted image samples and listening to opinions of the few users.

Normally I'm an impulse buyer but not with this camera for some reason. Consequently I'm happier with this purchase than anything I've bought in some time.

The desire to get a Leica III (probably c) with a collapsible lens has lodged itself in my brain. Ironically all the talk of a mini M brought it on (well got me thinking about it again). I like the idea of more pocketable solid metal rangefinder and the lure of a slower work flow. I am resisting for the moment, though am scouring the classifieds. This in turn causes me to find 'bargains' in cameras I wasn't even looking at. A dangerous spiral!

I just got an x-e1, great high iso abilities, almost magical to the man who has never met a usable 1600 file 🙂

I do a lot of research before buying anything. The x-e1 was on the mental shopping list when it came out, and stayed there until last week...maybe another 28mm later this year, or save through the next 22 months for a noctilux before graduation...

Nah... No plans to buy anything. Just to take pictures with the (ridiculous number of) cameras I already own. VERY idly interested in the M typ 240 but I'll wait to try it first. Otherwise, there is absolutely no intersection between the very few cameras that idly interest me, and those I can easily afford.

Cheers,

R.

Dave,

I have funds set aside for:

o printing by third-party labs I plan to make proof prints for several projects in-progress I need to make a lot of prints

o Fuji XF primes, the 23/1.4 and 56/1.2 This will, complete my XF kit

o Fuji's next OVF/EVF APS-C body If their next generation bodies don't have an OVF, then I will buy a second XP1

o Strobes The five Nikon SB-80 DX strobes I use for gigs are due for replacement. Have to decide if I should keep buying theses tank-like old strobes or buy less expensive Asian knock offs more often.

I get easily obsessed with objects, cameras included, and I try to step back and let it pass, which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The DP2M was too strong of a pull for me to resist, and I'm glad I didn't. Next up? Nothing for a while, I hope . . . but there is that rumored new DP4M . . . heh.

And where were all you Barnack shoppers when I had my IIIA and IIIF in the classifieds?

Oh yeah, and hi, Ursula. I didn't know that was you!

At the moment I have no plans to buy any more gear...that doesn't mean if I happen to come across a great deal (thrift store, garage sale, pawn shop) I wouldn't come home without it...but it would have to fit in with what I already own...
For now it would be film and even there I have enough to last a while...
The last two items I have bought were a motor drive (as is, needed repair) and coupler (since the MD didn't come with one) for the Mamiya m645...the price made it all worth it and even if I don't like it I can still turn a profit by selling it...
The motor drive was something I have been looking into for some time now but wasn't real sure if I would ever buy one...again unless the price was right...

To answer your question...It takes a long time for me to pull the trigger on any new item I might be looking for...

I tend to take about a month or so in terms of making a decision to buy. A lot depends on how much research I can do which includes handling the camera when possible. Other times like w/ the Fuji xp1, it was hit the pre-order button immediately because of my experience w/ the x100.

Like Keith, the dp Merrill took me a bit longer... The sd1m I actually started my initial investigation on it about 2 weeks before Keith started the "are there any sd1m users thread "....

In the Fuji x series just waiting to hit the buy button on the 27 (hurry up and annouce 😛) next and basically I am done for lenses.

Just waiting for a sale on the 30f1.4 for the sd1m next.

These days over 80% of my shots are split between the Fuji and Merrill cameras.

I usually buy well behind the bleeding edge of technology, but I also usually make up my mind to buy something pretty quickly ... I do my research and it either says "yes" or "no", at which point I press the button or forget about the item.

Of course, if it's an expensive item, some time might be required for putting together the cash as I only pay cash for camera equipment and supplies.
