What is causing this Flare?

LeicaTom's pick show that it's NOT the rear door that does it as his camera doesnt have it. Has to be coming from the front or bottom, right?

Surely most (if not all) the light leaks seen here come from the bottom... either of the camera or the lens mount."

So why the random randomness?

If it were light leaks from the bottom, I'd just leave the camera out on a sunny day and each frame would have fog. But no - just a few frames per roll. No rhyme or reason. Look at my last three pics (above). Two in artificial light, one in broad daylight. The other frames on the same rolls were fine!

Hmmm well, sorry to say this guys.....but the flare is at the TOP of my camera body/lens etc.

Tom, this one of yours would have it at the bottom...

This is kinda out there and not sure if physically possible but how's this.

If the lens isn't fully seated and the lens release button is still depressed slightly, could light somehow slip in there and bounce off that shiny lens mount and hit the film ? Some of the leaks show a sharp to soft progression which could (?) mean it's coming from the side ?

I had the lens off and on and the bottom same of my M6 and am totally baffled as to the cause of the leaks. We need Hercule Poirot on the case.

from your third last photo example, the light leak/flare is coming from the bottom part of the camera, as the image is inverted in a camera.

It is not flare or a light leak .....
it is a strange phenomenon that has been happening all over the world.... for centuries, or at least as long as cameras have been around.

No that`s at the TOP ?

I always turn my camera to the left when I shoot vertical, so that shot above was shot as I see it through the camera and viewfinder, so that makes it the top doesn`t it????

I`m all confused, if this was a bottom plate leak it would leak on ALL photos and with ALL lenses, this only happens when I use my two "Japan" Nikkor`s.

I had a Zorki 1 that had a similar light leak.
it turned out to be a light leak around the bottom body shell screw, the one on the rewind knob side.

Tom, the image is flopped upside down (and backwards) inside the camera. So what's at the top of the frame in the viewfinder, is at the bottom of the frame inside the camera on the film plane.

Ahh ok, I was`nt thinking, yeah sorry.........uggggh this sucks, but I wonder why is it when I just use those lenses????? Hmmmm well, maybe the bottom plate`s not seating properly?????

Ohh great! ............... my "Japan" Nikkor SC is possessed by a long forgotten dead Samurai warrior

Someone pass me the Saki please! :D

Tom

PS: I wonder if that along with the CLA will drive the price up if I sell it? *JUST KIDDING*

Tom -

I'm not entirely sure it's due to bottom plate issues or other light leaks. The fact that the flare is confined to the frame (and doesn't extend out) has me still thinking its coming from the lenses and getting around the shutter curtain somehow. But exactly how, I have no idea whatsoever.

*shrug*
