Every time when I read reviews of new SLR cameras and even the M8
then I notice that they're great cams, but regarding high ISO,
people are often disappointed.
How come that the RD-1(s) performs so well at ISO 1600 and other
camera's don't.

Large sensor sites and good software.

And it's only 6Mpx, dont have to cram way too many pixel into a limited space

Same reason the Canon 5D has a similar performance. 12mp on a full frame sensor or 6mp on a cropped sensor, the photo sites are spread out well enough to allow clean capture.

That's why it can have large sensor sites. The larger the sensor sites, the better the signal to noise ratio. Large sites provide a higher signal for the same amount of noise.

I've read that the high iso performance of the M8 isn't that great, but at 1600 on the R-D1 I would only rate it at a little better than average. Comparing it to my 5D there wasn't any comparison, the 5D blew it away. But for the size and age of the R-D1 it is really good.

The 5D stuff I've seen seems better than my R-D1 at 1600, but the R-D1 is still pretty great. Sometimes it's a little hit or miss, but there's also a quality about the noise that's somehow less ugly and distracting than other cameras, more film-like.

Especially in black and white, the high-ISO noise looks a lot like the grain of fast or pushed film stock.

dunno what u're reading. Even comparing a camera of the same generation, the 20D at 1600 whoops the RD1 every day of the week. As for comparisons with the m8... one needs to compare like with like. The m8 is no slouch at 2500 if shooting b/w, i'd pick it over the rd1 files everyday. Comparing color, both are equally horrible in my books. Of course, u'd point out that the m8 stinks in warm light... and u'd be right!Every time when I read reviews of new SLR cameras and even the M8

Overall, i think the rd1 is just one really over rated camera. Its aged and dated and should be accepted as such. It is at best a novelty and a milestone in its prime.

I would consider my R-D1 high ISO performance no more than average.
I still prefer it to the M8 high ISO, but any half decent modern DSLR is better.
