What is this?

Hi,

Well, I don't know what to call it but I think it would be used to position the centre of the lens over the centre of the tripod, mainly for balance and panoramas.

Exactly, it's a generic model usually just called "Tripod Mount Adapter".

Hi,

I've never understood why so little thought is given to the positioning of the tripod socket. My 1926 and my 1996* Leica have it at the far end and the thing is then badly off balance. OTOH, Contax got it right and added a little tab to stop the things falling over when put down. The early Zenit SLR's and the Kievs did the same.

You wonder if any of the designers used a tripod or understood the stress on the base plate. R G Lewis and Wallace Heaton made adapters for Leicas and other in the 50's but I guess many of them have been thrown away.

The R G Lewis one (a cradle) turns up on ebay from time to time but, although I've seen the catalogue picture of the WH one, I've never managed to find one for sale...

Regards, David

* My Mini 3 has the bush at the far end and the mini tripod has one of its feet longer than the others to balance it.
