People are overly-argumentative wherever you go. They don't share information or opinions. They talk to "win".

Arguing about the merits of a photograph or a photographer's body of work are more interesting than arguing about a camera because the judgment of photography itself is subjective. Lots of good constructive criticism and individual thoughts on art, style, society, etc. can come up in those conversations. Arguing about a camera is a simple exclamation of one's opinion about a physical object which can serve as a tool or, for some, as a status symbol. The same topics that come up with regard to art can't really apply to machinery in the same way. The camera itself cannot simply represent the photographs it makes.

As for the internet, this is what it was created for.

Good question. I think arguing about photographers is worse, as you tend to get a lot more snobbishness and self deception.
