i am quite happy with my ltm cv 35/2.5 color skopar with adapter but would like a little more speed - without the adapter. anything available for $300-$400 or so? i do realize there are more bargains in ltm ...

For speed - the Nokton 35f1.4, but that it a bit more than your budget. best bang for the buck would be a Nokton 40f1.4 - reasonably priced used and so good. Just use the inside of the frame lines as a guide. Rf cameras are never that precise as to framing anyway.

Pickins are slim in that price range for m-mount, Paul. Along the lines Tom suggests, you could find a Rokkor-M 40/2 in that price range, but I don't think the half stop speed gain is worth the extra dough (although it's a great lens).

Is the adapter really an issue? There's a VC 35mm f/1.7 Ultron in the classifieds that looks like it would suit your needs otherwise.

I have owned the all the CV 35mm lens at one point or another (wow look what GAS has done to me), all wonderful in different ways. Really love the IQ on the small 35/2.5 but I love Tom's Idea of using the 40/1.4. And it is in your $$$ range.

a used cv 35/1.4 should go for around $450-500 used. being m mount, the only other fast option would be the cv 40/1.4... ive never used the 40 but sounds like a good balance between angle of view and oof. if you reconsider ltm, the 1.8 canon might be a great option.

A little higher these days since they are very hard to find new...
