This certainly seems like a lens with a few too many issues unless you're like Brian and have enough other project lenses laying around. Oh, and actually know what to do with them, that is 😱 :bang: :bang: :bang: 😀

Slightly more seriously, if Brian or anyone else cares to comment, it would seem to me that this is one RF lens where oil on the blades is a very bad sign as it's my understanding that fairly significant damage to the rear elements can be detected this way.

Just curious to add to my knowledge of these things.

The haze on the lens surface just behind the iris is a common problem with this lens. It is likely not due to improper cleaning, it just developed in place. If I remember an old discussion correctly, it is caused by lubricants damaging the coating used on the glass. It does not clean up if the lens is disassembled.

I have a lens that exhibits this issue, and RFF member Chris from Oz may used to have one too. The lens is still usable, but at the cost of reduced contrast (at least with mine). A candidate for replacement of the rear lens group, if anyone can find a donor. I think that Brian Sweeney performed this surgery for some lucky RFFer at one time.

I just saw that Brian mentions the oil damaging the coatings in this thread.
