What shoes do you wear when shooting?

While in the military - combat boots. Now - anything but sandals, as a piece of hot brass stuck between the toes has a rapid effect on where the round goes down range.

You mean the *next* round, right?

I hated my first pair of issued boots until I made a friend in supply who could order me boots that were properly sized. My feet are like a duck's. 9.5EE which is made by Belleville as well as a few others with an NSN but they are hard to get. Not normally stocked, ever. Once I had some contacts in supply my feet were more comfortable and I was eating better.
It got much better when I transferred to the Seabees. :D

I have some Fry's boots but they blew out the side. I am going to return them. I expect boots to last at least a year....

That said, when I get some money I am looking into these for durability and just as importantly walkability.

Dr Martens 'AirWair' 2976 Chelsea Boots in 'Smooth Black' - worn for work, play, church, shopping, funerals and everything else in between including photography. There were instantly comfortable.

In summertime this is what I wear. It needs some use to it :)

Sometimes I go for my swedish clogs, but they are certainly not for everyone...

Whatever I happen to be wearing. Certainly never gave much thought to "photo shoes." Really?

I think the "while shooting" was a thinly veiled attempt to have a thread on footwear on a camera forum. It is sort of relevant for those of us who enjoy hitting the streets, and need something a little more heavy duty than a pair of nikes.:D

That is correct. Surely anyone spending 4-8 hours on the streets shooting in all kinds of weather thinks ahead of time what footwear works best. Also, if one has a meeting with a City Council to talk about a project, not only shoes, but appropriate dress would be considered.

Some of us have had foot injuries in the past. I crushed my foot when my Harley went down in 2001. Couple that injury with high arches, then, my choice of good comfortable footwear is very important to me. Jimmy Choo Choos be damned.:D

Wolverine boots - I have sprained my ankles more times that I can count over the past 35+ years of shooting for rural weekly newspapers. The boots give good support, are somewhat weatherproof, and have oil-proof soles with good traction. They can be warm this time of year, but never to the point that they make my feet uncomfortable. The two pair I have now have lasted three and two years respectively, and one pair or the other is in use five days a week. Maybe not fashion-conscious, but they're wonderful if you care about staying upright in terrain that's not always flat or safe.

Getting a lot of thoughts on boots. How about a pair of slip-ons that will work on hot pavement (mid-90F weather here yields very hot asphalt), give support, and look professional? Merrell shoes?

[...] Let's hope they last me a few years (or decades!)

The weak spot of the good old Doc Martens is the sole. It wears off pretty fast. However, the black ones are one of my favourite shoes. I have been wearing them regularly since over 20 years. Breaking them in is a pain, but worn in they are quite comfortable. How about a fashion subforum? ;) :D

I originally got a pair of brown "paratrooper" style boots from Dr. Marten (can't remember the exact model name). They were absolute sh*t! The main sole was stitched to the boot sure, but the heel was glued on! After about 3 weeks it started to come apart. Then the flap you use to pull them on broke. I took them back and went with the classic solid sole 1460. Far more timeless, and cheaper to boot! (pun intended). Plus the red ages to a deep maroon colour that I really dig, and they catch a lot more people's eyes than the brown ones ;)

Oh yeah, and they're great for trudging around Toronto when I'm shooting!
