Makten: THANK YOU for going to the trouble of posting the pics with the 55/1.2 AIS. I really like the signature of that lens. The have more difficulty "seeing" the quality of the lens in color than B&W (I shoot more B&W), but the examples you gave would seem to look quite good in B&W: fast, sharp focus plane, nice (creamy-ish) tonal rendition and bokeh.
I'm not into the modern look at this time, so I would lean toward the 55/1.2 rather than the 50/1.2 (but thanks Frank, all recommendations 'preciated).
And I will remember the 28mm AIS suggested (in my Excel spreadsheet!) if I decide to go wider than 35mm.
Best,
You're welcome! And here are some more with the 55, all wide open...

50/1.4 SMC Takumar? One hell of a lens. No equivalent in the Pentax or Zeiss M42 range to the 35 Lux, though.
I have seen some photos of this lens before, (and now again on Flickr) I now what you are referring to. I just did a brief search for the type of lens mount, but on clear answer: is it a K mount? m42? Perhaps more importantly, are there adaptors which would allow me to mount to Nikon/Canon/etc?
Sorry - been away from the computer for a while. My version of the 50/1.4 Tak is in M42, though I believe there are several K mount incarnations too. The beauty of M42 is that they're easily adaptable to almost any of the modern DLSR formats with a non-optical adaptor as they have a relatively long registration. Look for a super-multi-coated or SMC version (as opposed to the super-Takumar or plain Takumar). Whilst you're playing with M42 optics, I thoroughly recommend the 35/2.4 Flektogon that Paulfish mentioned, even though it lacks the speed of a 35 Lux, as well as the utterly wonderful Zeiss 135/3.5 Sonnar. Rather rarer is the 85/1.8 SMC Takumar; I recently scored on of these and I'm completely smitten!

Vivitar branded M42 35/1.9 is very good, haven't compared side by side with a Leica lens though. I think it was made by Kiron or Tamron or some other vendor. Heavy lens, built like a tank. Felt metal Vivitar lens cap.

Makten & Jamie:
very nice photos, the 55/1.2 is one lens I will have to try. Looks like I'll buy 2-3 50mm's and try them out, and decide on one. The Takumar would be in the top 3 as well.
I didnt know the Flektagon was an M42 mount, thanks. I will start with the 50 Tak befor going to a 35mm or 85 Tak, but would be nice to see some of your 85/1.8 Tak shots. Im afraid the 35/2.4 may be a bit slow. I didnt want to dip above f2.0 for the 35mm in particular to ensure proper DOF/OOF and bokeh.
I looked at the Leica R lens: the 35 Cron and the 50 Lux: the images on flickr seem to present this lens as being pretty high saturation and contrast, although these lenses undoubtedly "shine" in B&W and low light. Perhaps its just the Flickr crowds' style, but for me it was too much saturation and contrast for these lenses. I havent totally written them off, I'm just saying.
Maybe heres an even more difficult challenge: finding a short zoom lens adaptable to dSLR with f less than 3.5 that have similar Summilux qualities.... anyone? suggestions?
thanks all, Gary
