What sort of people use film?

I am from the past.
The Millennials have it right!
Phone camera for imaging, film for photography.
The camera companies have it all wrong!
Its not bigger and worse focusing lenses. (Leica and Zeiss).
Digital systems are out of date.
Portability and easy user interface.

Imaging for social media, Film-Photography for serious work.
I have no need to update equipment.
Film is plentiful, process really easy.

I liked not seeing a question about gender. Someone in my generation would likely have included that without really thinking about it very much.

Hey guys,
For my current project in college which is commercial photography I am going to be shooting a advertising campaign for a brand of film and I am trying to identify a target audience by collecting data on the people who shoot film.

For this I have created a small google forms questionnaire which will help me to analyse the data that people enter and allow me to tailor what I produce to appeal to the target audience most likely to buy the brand of film I am basing my project on. Once I have collected enough data I will share these results with you guys who may be interested

Why do film shooters frequently sound like they think they are superior?

I use both film and digital depending on the circumstances and enjoy both.
Both very different of course but there again I don`t eat the same meal every day.
What has always puzzled me about these film/digital threads is that a least for some film users you come away with the impression that their dislike for digital is almost a condition of their love for film.

Why can`t they just enjoy it.

You never hear film being disparaged in digital threads.
Its a curious phenomenom

Certainly in daily life I do. When the topic occasionally arises the mere
mention that I prefer film and not digital usually elicits ire and derision.

I always feel like this too. AND I don't mind if the photos are great. BUT sometimes the images are mediocre and I'm supposed to feel better because they are on film? Film is not novel to me. I'm old enough to have only used film because it was the mainstream choice... just like digital is now. I went to school for photography in the 90s... we used film and digital was in its infancy. I've had people tell me.... "you should TRY film" in 2015. :bang: Try it? I remember when it was the only easy choice. Before digital, there must have been a guy or two around saying "why do you use roll film" ... "real photographers only make daguerreotypes!"

I mix in an all digital camera club every week and I get surprise at times and asked why but that`s all.

I think the only negative remark I`ve had .... was "I see no point in using old technology" .
Its probably not a fair comparison though because the club is comprised of ,shall we say,mature members some of whom have many national and international distinctions with film shots and darkroom printing over the years.

They`ve just taken the decision to move on whilst still missing the old analogue days.

I can't find the link anymore, but several years ago I read a scanned photo magazine from around the time that roll film was being introduced and there was either a column or a letter to the editor bemoaning the demise of "real" photography what with roll film enabling "the masses" to make photographs. Because they weren't serious enough or motivated enough to learn the chemistry nor dedicated enough to endure the struggle of using the "real" cameras and associated gear.

I did save that pdf file but in migrating two or three times to new computers it has been left behind.

True enough!
I'm not saying that gender is never a useful or pertinent question, just that I think it tends to be included with out thinking about why.
