This question always gets a lot of "I carry all my camera gear + a spare BMW engine in my pockets" 🙂 The in-my-pockets practice may work fine in places with temperate to cold weather but in Arizona (for example) most of the year I wear the lightest shorts and a skimpiest t-shirt I can legally be seen in, to avoid overheating. After my car keys and a walet, there ain't no damn pockets left for camera gear, i.e. a bag is the only solution. I would guess this might be true for other folks and places. Just my 25 cents.

I hate straps so I usually have a bag with me even though I only carry one body with a lens attached and possibly another lens. They could fit in my pockets but Leicas tend to weigh down your pockets. Plus in a bar or a crowded restaurant, sometimes your jacket gets moved pushed off a bar stool etc.
That said my method is usually some sort of insert or small bag inside a messenger style bag because I find most camera bags assume much more camera gear and much less other stuff. Basically I need room for the camera, some film and a newspaper or magazine. Most camera bags are wide and shallow which just doesn't work.

I much prefer straps on the cameras themselves, but also use photo inserts from a variety of makers (Billingham, Tenba, Domke) in non-photo bags when I need to carry extra bodies/lenses/photo stuff. For work (dayjob) I'll put the insert inside of a briefcase; outside the office, the insert goes into a messenger/shoulder bag (my mainstay is the smallest Chrome bag, the "Mini-Metro").

After looking at all the bag recommendations, looking at many different manufacturer's bags, I went with the Mountainsmith Aurora II. It's a dedicated camera bag with enough space for my kit as it is. Extra room for film, keys and other small stuff. Three pics:

Well I have been using my old trusty Banana Republic correspondants bag for the past twenty four years...but recently have fallen completely in love with the Lowe-Pro line, and probably have a dozen or so different bags ranging from the stealth reporter series, belt-packs, to different back-packs. all are great for different purposes. I used to carry two nikon bodies and five lenses in my old correspondants bag wherevre i went...but that takes it's toll on you after a while.
I had been looking at teh luigi half-case, but when i aquired the S2 and S3 along with 35 and 135 lens's both came with the nikon half-cases(one with complete case)
...but i have yet to find teh right bag for them. I have the vintage leather bag the s2 came with which carries it and two lenses and a meter fine...and looks great. Hartman made a cool leather bag forty years ago, look on ebay here and there! I have one of those too.

I have one of the original Domke F2 bags, which I bought new when they first became available. It shows no signs of wear, as I only use it to organize some of my gear in between shoots. The furthest it travels is from one room in my home to the other! When I head out the door, I usually carry only one camera and a "standard" focal lens--occasionally a spare prime lens (except when using the Yashica Mat 124G, on which the lens is permanently fixed 😛).

I never used to leave home without a camera bag; but now I find myself leaving them at home. Instead, I usually just take one camera and sling it over my shoulder. The only time I bother with them is when I know I will be burning a lot of film or really feel the need to have a backup body with me.

i have & use the domke 5xa, 5xb, f6 and the 802 satchel.
the 802 is my daily bag for work, usually has a film camera and the grd in it.
the 5xa is now used for the cle kit.
the 5xb is for whatever i feel like carrying on a particular outing.
the f6 (i have 2) stores both the zm and cv kits and should i want to carry the complete kit, they are ready to go.
hard to beat a domke.

My daily-use briefcase (OK it is probably a man purse) is a Timbuk2 medium laptop messenger. I slipped in the small insert from a Naneu Pro Sierra to hold a camera. There is plenty of room for my too-big laptop, files, bottle of water and other incidentals - and an extra lens or two plus film. When I want to mount a more geared-up photo expedition I can put in the big Naneu insert, or both the big and small if I give up the laptop. Very flexible, and the Timbuk2's are common as dirt where I live and so, invisible - as long as I keep the flap closed nobody would think I might have a bunch of camera gear inside.

I have a number of bags. One is a old green tamarac, which I've had for years. It carries one or two cameras with additional lenses. A small Lowepro for one camera & several rolls of film. Another is a leather computer attache case for overseas travel. Easily holds three rangefinders & an extra lens or two with film. I also, have an over the shoulder LLBean bag which I can throw in a small rangefincder & what ever else I need. One think that I often carry is a carabiner which I clip to the bag. If I am at locations where I think that the bag may be "accidentally" removed by subjects unkown I clip the bag to the table or chair. But, mostly I prefer to choose the camera & lens I wish to use that day & carrry it without a bag. If it is small enough a simple Godrdy strap. Larger cameras on my shoulder. One thing I have found: Old video bags can be found for $2 and make excellent car bags. The camera is stuffed in the bag with the lenses in separate pouches. The outside pouch carries the film.
